Several players made a crop circle in the grass as they ran around a large bush during one of many rain dances organized by a Government scientist. There was an air of confidence that rain was imminent, and sure enough only a few seconds into this dance reaching it’s most energized point, the rain started falling. It was the night of 27th October 2022, and the Weather Computer had proven itself to Government members and beyond.

Such tests raised questions on the issue of security though. One worker (not a formal member of the Government) had gone mad and attacked me with an axe shortly afterwards, forcing me to shoot him. His knowledge of the computer could have been far more dangerous. Another recent episode saw a mixture of dust and fog that limited visibility dramatically. The computer behind these episodes is not a complex one, but I fear the impact of such a machine in the Rust ecosystem at large has not been considered.

Playing God

Imagine your ally being attacked by bandits, but you didn’t realise it at first due to the thunder from the manifestation of a storm. You try to assist your ally, but you arrive too late to stop the attackers from getting away with their crimes under the cover of the poor weather. Flying, boating, or driving would be treacherous in such conditions, and so you were beaten before the battle had even started.

The mad scientist behind the project has been accused of cheating to use this system, but having seen a glimpse of the machine myself – this is a device on a level that EAC cannot reckon with. It can only be stopped by the higher ranking officers within the Government agreeing to put an end to this ethical dilemma. Can we trust the people involved in the project, and are we aware of the effects of militarising such a system? Concerns have been raised about the potential of controlling this much power, and the danger of it slipping into unscrupulous hands…
