Theft of unlocked doors
Roughly 99% of player-made doors in Rust are kept locked. The door of an art gallery might be left unlocked so that players could visit it, but the unlocked doors frequently went missing. The doors were cheap, being made of wood, so there was an assumption that they were destroyed by flamethrowers or molotovs. Why would someone destroy a door that was unlocked? It was assumed that the potential raiders simply didn't notice that there was no lock on it.

A player can't place a door on a doorway if a tool cupboard is nearby which they aren't authorized on, so it was not assumed that a player could steal an art gallery door (protected by a tool cupboard). For the sake of being thorough, an experiment was run in Jan 2024 which found that a tool cupboard doesn't protect the door - you can simply pick up unlocked doors from any base, and you don't even need a hammer to pick it up. One art gallery builder described the mechanic as "awkward and pointless."

The original version of the game (Rust Legacy) didn't even need tool cupboards to prevent doors (that didn't have locks on) from being picked up. A solution to protect art gallery doors then is to lock them in the open position, although this might make any visitors worried about easily being trapped inside the building if someone simply closes the door. A more advanced solution is to add an electronic door control with buttons to open and close the locked door.
