Discord was launched in 2015 and rose in popularity in 2016. Teamspeak had been the common voice communication program before Discord, but it costed money to host Teamspeak servers, while Discord freely allowed users to create groups that had voice channels, which supported the creation of many small groups - the shift from Teamspeak to Discord impacted the culture and scale of Rust groups.

One group made a system of commands in their Discord server which helped with coordination, and also an automatic rank system that helped with security.
