Mouse cursor missing - found cause?
Hello,

I was having an issue where in multiple games, steam-in home streaming would not show a mouse cursor in my games on the client (tested in both DOTA 2 and The Banner Saga).

However when remoting into my desktop, everything worked fine (showed a cursor). Problem was only with games. My host is Windows 8.1 64 bit, streaming to Windows 7 64 bit laptop.

I found the somewhat odd cause: I only have one gaming mouse, so when doing in-home streaming I disconnected the mouse from desktop and plugged it into laptop. Though a cursor still shows up in Windows with no mouse connected, apparently it does not show up in streamed games. When I reconnect mouse to host computer and stream to client again, the formerly invisible mouse cursor reappears.

So I guess I need to get a second mouse to keep plugged into host computer when streaming, instead of remoting in like I was :)

This is still ongoing - if no mouse is plugged into host computer, no mouse cursor appears on client machine in DOTA 2.

Very Helpful post CosmonautLaika. So bizarre.

Would like to say a big thank you CosmonautLaika.

I had been wondering why the mouse had stopped showing up when streaming and this was the answer. My remote PC was set up on a KVM that has not been turned on recently and so no mouse was being detected. Plugging in a standard USB mouse to a spare port has fixed the problem.

Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 hide the cursor when there is no physical mouse plugged in, even if you have a mouse-like device using software emulation. Very annoying! (I personally plug a cheap mouse in and just leave it there - there's no harm in having two mice.)

Windows 10 also disables sound when there is no audio device physically connected.

I had to connect a pair of headphones to my server to be able to hear sound when streaming.

In some games, I still can't see the mouse in the stream. I see it on my PC monitor though.
