Steam Link hardware laggy?
Hey all,

So I bought a Steam Link device recently so I can stream my steam deck to the TV, I done a factory reset on the device and brand new setup so it’s clean.

Upon loading up after it’s done all its updates, connected via Ethernet to a 1Gbps internet (900mbps down and about 100mbps upload) so very fast internet.

Before I even connect any devices and using the menu interface to browse settings etc. it’s very slow and laggy on the device itself? Anyone else noticed this.

When I then connect my deck or PC, it’s just terrible performance even though it’s tried Ethernet on both, 5Ghz WiFi bands, reset modems, opened ports. The performance is just SHOCKING with steam link.

I thought it was the entire thing but seeing the steam link device a little laggy is making me think it’s that?

Anyone got any suggestions to improve this because I want to play steam link/ steam deck to my Tv. If I could cast the steam deck to my Tv then I could avoid it but sadly it doesn’t have this feature.

Yes, I’ve taken a look at the website for troubleshooting. Ports are open for the deck, Ethernet cable plugged in. I can download a game on my pc at 900+ so insane speed but the Link just doesn’t like it and when when testing the speed to the deck it shows 5mbps something and even 30mbps tops

Thank you.

disable any vpn
windows network set to private not public
if using wifi, check router settings, disable wifi isolation for the ssid you use
steam -> settings -> remote play -> allow direct = all/auto/my not disabled

and make sure you can ping the lan ip of the client device from the host pc

you do not need to open ports, that can cause problems, and allow others (internet side) to connect to the host by trying to connect to the routers internet ip
that is not needed anymore, since remote play from your devices uses steams internet relays

No VPN enabled and you cannot on the Steam Link software.

I wonder if QoS on would make a difference?

Also AP isolation is disabled in the router.

you can use vpn on host, or router

qos can change priority of packets, router should only apply qos rules for internet traffic not lan

some routers use a optimization that can try to compress and delay remote play
steam uses very little compression for video, which is why its fast to decode with almost no delay

can you ping the link ip?

I only want to steam link between the deck and the link hardware device which is connected to my TV.

I have not tried to ping anything.

I have the ASUS AC5300 GT router if that helps - I did remove all this and attempt the same method with my standard super hub 5 which I had the same results.

you can check in the steam deck forum to see where the remote play log is

https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/app/1675200/discussions/

and make a thread in the steam link forum
https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/app/353380/discussions/

if it is a problem with the link hardware or remote play, the dev\mod there can help

i would try using a pc to see if you can ping the link and deck lan ip to make sure its not the router blocking it
Pinged the Steam Link: - Ethernet

Ping statistics for REMOVED IP:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

Pinged the Steam Deck: - 5Ghz Wireless

Ping statistics for REMOVED IP:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 48ms, Average = 20ms

I did just try something, on the Steam Deck I enabled Developer Mode, then in that setting I disabled the 'Enable WiFi Power Management' and since I've done that, I re-ran the ping to the deck and NOW I have:

Ping statistics for REMOVED IP: - 5Ghz Wireless same network
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 4ms, Average = 3ms - This is better already
