well they had no tax so far oh and the tax is not fixed, if you pay $6 the tax goes up to 1€ :D yeah

VAT is a consumption tax, so it should change depending on purchase price. (It's 22% in Italy according to Wikipedia.)

As to why they haven't charged tax before: that puzzles me too, but I don't know the fine details of EU tax law.

They have just paid it out of selected price (like it's supposed to be), instead of adding.
