Happy New Year to all fellow Grim Dawners.

I just wanted a toon to rapidly run through the game and test all quests and other issues without a need to really worry about builds. To this end, I used Cheat Engine to give myself 7596524 experience points (level 35).

Start GD, start and attach CE to GrimDawn.exe and create a new toon.

Using default CE search type (exact value / 4 bytes) search for the number 0 (zero) or whatever XP your toon might have (mouse over XP bar in HUD to find that number, but do not enter commas, we are looking for numeric data).

Since there are a lot of 0s, you need to cross the bridge and kill something, mouse over the XP bar, go back to CE type in that new XP value and click "Next Scan". Do this a few times until there are only 2 address left.

The first address is the display value and the second is the actual XP. Change them both to 7596524, kill 1 more monster, quit GD completely, quit CE and restart the game. Your toon should have 102 skill points and 34 attribute points ready to do whatever the hell it is you wanna do with such a cheat.

If you want to have a dual mastery class, things have to be done in stages. First get your toon to level 2, by using the target 69 in CE and then killing 1 more enemy to ding level 2. For this, you proceed just as above until CE has located the 2 memory addresses holding your XP values. Once they are located, change them to 69, return to GD and kill something else to ding level 2, opening up the option to select first mastery. You no longer have to perform any more "Next Scan"s in CE, you have the addresses, so to be at the upper limit of level 9, change these values in CE to 9163, return to GD and ding level 10. Once you have dinged 10 and unlocked the second mastery, return to CE a final time and set your XP values to 7596524. Return to GD and just read Francis' Note as the XP you get for killing level 1 zombies is possibly zero due to the level difference to actually ding 35. Quit GD and CE and when you restart with this toon, it will be level 35 with both mastery choices available.

NOTE: In hosted MP, there are often 3 values found in CE instead of 2. Not sure about this yet.

Start CheatEngine
Start GrimDawn - but do not select toon yet.
Attach CE to GD (flashing button under File Menu, select GrimDawn.exe from process list).
Change "Value Type" to String and click "New Scan" button with "poolValue * 1" in the Text edit for the search term.

You will have more than 2 results, this part has me really curious but in fact, you only need to change the first 2 entries. Right Click and select to change the value and put in place "poolValue * 6" or replace 6 with whatever you want.

I call Ghastly on my streams a "poolValue + 4" substitution and I tell you this to remark that you can replace the "*" multiply sign with a "+" sign if you like. Modded this way is a nice increase without breaking your computer (in terms of slowdown due to just too many baddies).
Then, when you select toon and enter game, you can come back to CE and search for the inital "poolValue * 1" (which you should not find anymore) and the replaced value "poolValue * 6" (again, just an example but you should find hundreds of them).

You do not need to do anything here, this is just to confirm that everything that gets generated by the game is now using your new value.


This should work to mod other things too, but for now, just trying this one.

The last time I played with my GD modding code, I broke it completely. I am about to go on vacation and hope to make some progress finishing the code re-write but in the meantime...

Felt like playing GD this morning and honestly, the default spawn levels are just way too low to make it appealing. So here is an xmax with iron database compatible with b16 that was just hacked together without much care, but at least I was able to die in the village once.
