General race settings and format
Hello hello! Thanks to everyone who joined in for the open-wheel tournament last night. Overall you guys seemed very happy with the event, but certainly there are some improvements to make. I took a few short notes on any controversial settings, and it would be great to hear feedback.

  • Track selection
  • Collision
  • use of upgrades/tuning
  • grid order style
  • collision

______________________________

Tracks

I tried to balance the tracks, between length and turns. However, I made an oversight in that open-wheel races are preferred (at least by some drivers) on open tracks, not street courses. In addition, the Oval was a bad idea and we all agreed there!

Collision

There is justification for both the On and Off settings in this case. On the one hand, disabling collision allows players to run their best racing lines without having to worry about "Racer X" who is already in that racing line, or bumping into someone, and so on. Players can simply race without hindrance or hassle. That being said, turning off collision can make the race feel more like a single-player time-attack race with Ghost cars to benchmark your lap times against. It feels less "real" perhaps. Lastly, it eliminated the strategy of slipstream/drafting on tracks with long straightaways. This is something you guys as players will need to work out and I will do my best to help nurture the discussion. In the end, we need to know what you guys prefer and we also need to see everyone work together to iron out this delicate issue. One thing I believe we agreed on in the tournament, was to disable collision in any time-attack qualifier events.

Use of upgrades and tuning

There seems to be a unanimous agreement that all tunings and upgrades should be disabled during tournaments. Otherwise, people who own the car and have driven it a lot, will have an unfair advantage against players who bought the car recently or are using a loan.

Grid Order

The grid order was discussed mid-tournament last night as well. For a fully "fair" approach we can always default to Random order. However, what do you guys think about reverse standings (lowest point totals first) ? Or something else?

Flashbacks

Sometimes I see people wanting a few flashbacks, sometimes I see a preference for zero. I'm all for zero myself, but sometimes a player gets knocked out by another racer when they didn't do anything wrong; a flashback removes damage so that only some time is lost, instead of car performance and a lot of time. This issue is dependent on whether we use collision in events, though.

In the end, the goal here is to choose settings that are appropriate for a tournament. Your feedback will help make these events worthy of GRID Autosport.

- Track selection
I like all kinds of tracks except the oval one. My favorites are probably Mount Panorama, Hockenheim Ring and Okutama because the have a little bit of everything, slow corners, fast corners, nice straights and uphill/downhill.

- Collision
I'd say it should always be turned on unless the event is time attack.

- Upgrades/tuning
In my opinion they should be enabled so there would be a difference between people who invest in their cars, they deserve the benefits.

- Gird order
I think order should be reversed after every race. Makes it more of a challenge.

- Flashbacks
One or 2 should be enough. Giving people 5 flashbacks just encourages them to drive more recklessly.

I hope we have more races in the future! :flag:

- Track selection
I like all the tracks too, this is not a problem.

- Collision
A opition to disable the collision is everything that i think: PERFECT, because some players use this for a "stolen victory", making the others players sking and hit in the wall... But in another hand, in a good race with good players, we can use the void (i don't know the name in english when a car stay behind another to cut the air and run a little faster) break a great time or do a nicely curve with overtaking.

- Upgrades/tuning
Here is the problem! I think that take the competitive edge of racer, because in race at real life all the cars have the same engine or other parts, just have that small configurations (like the transmission [top speed/aceleration], suspension [hard/smooth] and the others that we know).

- Gird order
Invert the grid other make more competitive, is great!

- Flashbacks
Flashbacks is good but only in single player, online: NO!

(Sorry for my english :beatmeat:)

I think that upgrades and tunings should be enabled.

Not because of a "I earned it, thus I'm entitled" mentality, but because I want to get better at the discipline. Yes, I want our events to be open to everyone and a welcoming place to all levels, I'll help anyone who asks for advice. The way I see it that should be a kick in the pants to anyone who wants to improve; to go buy their car, work at upgrading, tuning, and doing better.

And this is not to say that we can't ever have any event with no upgrades or vice versa. It really boils down to whether upgrades and tuning are enabled/disabled simply has to be stated in the event page before people sign up so there's no (or less) confusion.

Time attack events being considered? :)
DrewUniverse 3 Sep, 2014 @ 1:09pm
Yes, but it will overlap with the purpose of our weekly time trials. Additionally, it is near-impossible to broadcast time attack events. The events still deserve to happen, yes, but we can't tell you who's "winning" until the race is over. We can back out of spectating mode and see the race standings once per lap but watching that screen means we're reading a page instead of watching the racers. This is one reason why race-to-finish-first events are much easier to broadcast and do commentary for. If anyone has a solution for that, please bring it up!
Col. Sanders 3 Sep, 2014 @ 2:28pm
Further comment, granted I am personally against steaming, do all events need broadcasts? TA events would be the exception as the people playing them would read for results is all.
DrewUniverse 3 Sep, 2014 @ 4:09pm
May I ask why you are against streaming? If we don't know, we can't help. Not all events need broadcast, particularly not the mid-week Community Cups that start tomorrow. However, Tournament and Exhibition Cups are prestigious, and even moreso for the GASR Grand Championships each month. There will be times when I can't stream or host, and we'll make do, but I care a lot about not only our treatment of players, but also for a high-quality presentation.

Yes, TA events probably cannot be streamed without it being boring or unidentifiable. People would just watch me toggle cameras semi-randomly until the time/laps are done. The game doesn't show any checkpoint progress when spectating cameras.
Col. Sanders 4 Sep, 2014 @ 12:25pm
Oh yes I see you point, sorry I didn't mean the my opinion of streaming as a back handed or selfish comment on the events, I was speaking moreso in terms of TA events as you've desribed better =)

What I'm suggesting is a TA event with a points system perhaps? albeit casual by comparison to the major events. Perhaps event using such a thing as promotion of the weekly TT as well.

Settings for tier 3 (experts)

no tunings
no upgrades
no flash
no assists
manuel gearbox
full damage
collisions on
HUD, racing line, and camera position could be on.

I can see 0 flashbacks as the ideal choice, but an innocent driver may end up getting slammed in the side of his/her car, and they don't deserve to be knocked out of the race due to someone else's mistake. This is why I leave 1 flashback enabled, it is fair for drivers that get hit by someone else, so that they can undo steering/engine damage.

Disallowing tunings and upgrades ruins the point of buying the cars at all. The whole reason for a tournament is for driers to bring their best training and practice to the race track. DIsallowing tunings or upgrades (once CM fixes those) just takes away from the hard work people put into their cars.

Forcing manual gears, just like 0 flashbacks, is an ideal choice for "serious" driving. However, if we do this in GASR, we will have almost no-one attend. As several drivers have said already, we can't afford to have less people attend the events. I am not hosting a 4-driver standard tournament.

Your post seems to promote hardcore racing, up until I read "Racing Line can be enabled." Most of us don't need or use the racing line, but we leave it enabled because we want drivers to have all the help they can get to improve driving skill.
Goblin 1 Oct, 2014 @ 3:05am
In my opinion..

Tier 1 + 2, tuning enabled, upgrades disabled (not that they work at the moment anyway)

Tier 3, tuning and upgrades enabled.

You are tier 3, you should be able to atleast somewhat tune your car, and when upgrades work you should be able to handle the extra power.

This gives all drivers a reason to actually earn and level their vehicles. If this became races with no tuning at all, i'd quit immediately. Some cars are so bad without tuning that I distinctly dislike driving them.

I agree with Drew on running a single flashback, sometimes things just go horrible wrong and your race can be ruined by someone else.
At the same time, perhaps running 0 flashbacks will push drivers to drive more sensibly overall, so I could see an argument for both.
