Wow, I tried playing this game for about four hours yesterday, but I always failed miserably at mining. I woke up today and decided I would try again. If you're having trouble mining because your new, here's what worked for me!

First, DIG two STAIRS DOWN.
Also DIG a 5x5 or bigger hole in front of the stairs.
Directly infront of the stairs you dug down, make another set.
Now, DON'T DIG. That was the problem I was having for the longest time. You need to mine! Mine a small room, yet again infront of the stairs.
Continue to repeat this process until you reach two layers under stone, which is when I started mining (successfully) for ore.

I know this probably won't help anyone, especially in a group like this, but the mining system almost made me quit the game before I even knew how great it was.

Your miners are the only ones that can make chisels by default. So if your miners are too busy, they won't make a chisel until they are done mining what you told them to mine. You need to free up 1 miner, or make another gnome have the stonecutting/masonry profession to make a chisel

Been playing DF for a week using Ironhand, its better than ASCII but still awkward with its tiny pixels and awkward layer navigation. Looking forward to what Gnomoria has too offer

Wohoo 100th member, Great Game

These issue I had with DF was trying to handle the third dimension when given only the current layer and a shadow of the one level below. The culled isometric Gnomoria is using makes for a united view of one's entire construction.

my mind can't handle DF, even tho the graphics are so downgraded, my mind for some reason can't comprehend the visuals that i see, also, yes i THINK i see a connection

ASCII Art is a text-based art form, but it stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange.
Here is an example website: http://chris.com/ascii/
Here is what Dwarf Fortress Looked like: (Shortened URL): http://binged.it/ZNyGnS

See the connection?
