SOBRE Solidarity with Standing Rock

You can live without oil, you can live without money, but you can't live without water. Water is life.

What is Standing Rock?
The Standing Rock Indian Reservation is an old and respectable Hunkpapa Lakota and Yanktonai Dakota Indian reservation in North Dakota and South Dakota in the U.S.

What is #NODAPL and why is it important?
#NODAPL is the hashtag for the campaign against the construction of the North Dakota Access Pipeline spearheaded by the Standing Rock Sioux Nation.

The North Dakota Access Pipeline would transport half a million barrels of CRUDE OIL PER DAY across 50 counties and 4 states (North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, & Illinois. From there, it would connect to another existing pipeline with access to the Gulf of Mexico).

That’s 1172 miles.

The pipeline will cross the Missouri and Cannonball River, land that is sacred to the Sioux People of the Standing Rock Reservation. It also poses a HUGE THREAT to the environment.

What are the threats of the pipeline?
If the pipeline breaks at any point after construction, DRINKING WATER from the Missouri River would be CONTAMINATED WITHIN 5 MINUTES.

Pipeline accidents and leaks happen frequently, and they include: fires, explosions, propane releases, oil leaks, and more.

Not only will the water and land be affected, but also the air quality across North America. The Oil industry stands to profit tremendously from this project, but it could injure thousands of innocent people, and destroy the environment to an irreparable state.

Why should I care? Isn't this politics?
This isn't 'just politics'. It has to do with the environment, our very own drinking water, the land on which we live. This pipeline could (and likely would) destroy our climate. In the long run, it would come to affect you as well.

What can I do to help?
Educate yourself. Research, listen to those who have been fighting, LEARN from them. Open your eyes and consider the facts given to you. Look through the corrupted media that portrays these Natives as 'violent protestors'. There is no violence on their part. There are only prayers and peace.

Donate anything you can spare to the camps. These Natives are going to be there for a long while. Through the harsh winter, into next year, and possibly even longer. They are there to protect you, whether you realize it or not. Give any spare clothing, shoes, food, supplies.

Spread awareness. The more people know about the fight, the better. Share sites and articles with your friends and family. This isn't just the Native People's fight; it's YOUR fight too.

To put it bluntly: "People don't understand the whole deal with the pipeline still? Remember that movie Avatar? Basically us natives are the blue guys k? And the greedy oil assholes are the military coming to cut our big tree down."
