I know save its not possible in custom mode but i know how you can bypass make tricky workout to make it possible to use in game.

I play a lot custom maps in many games and good trick was in Warcraft 3 in customaps.
During game before you die you could type cmd -save
And game showed you on center screen code 12-20 digtals (mostly i did in this moment print screen and later rewrite it to notepad)

And now script generate special code based on your nick and inventory / hero class & his level
You could do it only once whole 1 match and before die :)

And next time when you louch game you had some time on start to type code (copy & paste from notepad mostly i did)
-Load "code" ex -load 123WQ-DSZ14-FWQAZ-@12WAZ (looked similar to old school cd key)
And after it game make a bit lag for 5s and add all items and swaped to hero which i plaid in pervus game based on generated code. - I had paste this code before i selected class on fresh start.

Script was some kind of encryption so each player had unique code which didnt work for other playes so... peoples cant use other code for get full stuff after other player.

You can do some check points in game where npc will tell you secred code
and you can use it in lobby where you start game to unlock door where you get better items from up so peoples dont must farm next hours for get them back

And more far more better tier door in which can be better loot.

And with this trick you can make game boards longer and ppl will start from this specific point intsead of begin.
