My surfing config - Post yours too!
Some people were discussing mouse configs earlier, and people seemed to be interested in seeing my configuration. I'm more than happy to share my configuration with people, but I expect others to post their configurations here, as well. Seeing multiple different configurations in the same place could help people decide what may be best for them or what is worth trying out even if they aren't new to surfing. Please refrain from posting your configuration if an identical config has already been posted (like default settings, for example).

My config is rather complicated, and I will try to explain it in depth. Feel free to try it out, but be warned that it will take a while before it is committed to muscle memory.

To start, I use a Mionix Avior 7000 (and previously a first-generation Razer Lachesis; I've always had a 9-button, symmetrical mouse). I use it at 1000hz and 1600dpi (which is the sensor's "native" dpi; the dpi the firmware was calibrated with). If you have an optical mouse, don't just use the dpi that pros are using. Find out the sensor's native dpi and use that. Any variance from the native dpi will include the risk of (uneven) acceleration. Here is my button configuration on the mouse:

Note: the buttons "*,-,O,P" can be any buttons you want. Just remember that the numpad has different values than the regular characters. For example, "-" on top of the keyboard is "minus", but "-" on the numpad is "kp_minus". Also, "Forward" is MOUSE5 and "Back" is MOUSE4.

I've excluded some of the commands (like unbind commands, volume, etc) but here's my surf.cfg file:

/// Turn Binds /// alias +hright "+speed;+right;+moveright" alias -hright "-speed;-right;-moveright" alias +hleft "+speed;+left;+moveleft" alias -hleft "-speed;-left;-moveleft" alias +fright "+right;+moveright" alias -fright "-right;-moveright" alias +fleft "+left;+moveleft" alias -fleft "-left;-moveleft" /// Sensitivity Binds /// alias +fast "sensitivity 0.65" alias -fast "sensitivity 0.4" alias +slow "sensitivity 0.25" alias -slow "sensitivity 0.4" alias +vfast "sensitivity 0.8" alias -vfast "sensitivity 0.4" sensitivity "0.4" /// Sensitivity Keys /// bind "kp_minus" "+slow" bind "o" "+vfast" bind "p" "+fast" /// Turn Bind Keys /// bind "MOUSE1" "+hleft" bind "MOUSE2" "+hright" bind "MOUSE3" "+fleft" bind "MOUSE5" "+fright" /// Jump Keys /// bind "MWHEELUP" "+jump" bind "MWHEELDOWN" "+jump"

Explanation of an "alias" command:
An alias command allows you to set one or more console command(s) to a single command which acts as a key-press. The + action is what happens when the key is pressed down, and the - action is what happens when the key is released.

Turn Binds:
I've included my strafe key with the turn binds to ensure perfect sync when using them. If you don't want them in your turn bind commands, remove +moveright -moveright +moveleft and -moveleft from the commands.
FRight and FLeft are normal turn binds.
HRight and HLeft are half-speed turn binds.
My left-click and right-click buttons are half-speed, and my middle-click button and the button immediately behind it are normal speed.
I rarely use the turn binds. I use them to supplement my turns; not to replace them. For example, if I've hit the edge of my mousepad and I need a few more degrees, sometimes I'll use the turn bind for those extra few degrees, instead of lifting my mouse.

Sensitivity Binds:
These are the binds that people have been interested in. This setup allows me to surf at a relatively-low sensitivity, without sacrificing the ability to do fast 180's and multi-rotation spirals.
I've set my default sensitivity at 0.4, which is how I spend most of my time surfing. If you look at the Sensitivity Binds section, you'll notice that my sensitivity is adjusted WHILE I'm holding the assigned button, and that my sensitivity is returned to 0.4 once I have released the assigned button. The layout of the buttons is irrelevant, but you can cross-reference the picture of my mouse config if you're curious.

One bind reduces my sensitivity to 0.25 while the button is pressed. This is the bind i use the most frequently. It allows me to get excellent strafes by utilizing the entire mousepad (24 inches) for a small rotation. It's also very useful to facilitate a perfectly smooth landing or a perfect exit trajectory. On some easy maps with fewer turns, I use this bind the entire time, and release it for 180's.

The other binds raise my sensitivity while the button is pressed, which I use to make quick 180's with a flick of the wrist (also useful in comp, but I have a completely different config for that), and to achieve long spirals with a single, smooth mouse movement.

I also have a second surf config (surf2.cfg) which is identical to the one I posted, but with different sensitivities:
alias +fast "sensitivity 0.5"
alias -fast "sensitivity 1.0"
alias +slow "sensitivity 0.25"
alias -slow "sensitivity 1.0"
alias +vfast "sensitivity 1.2"
alias -vfast "sensitivity 1.0"
sensitivity "1.0"

With surf2.cfg, my default sensitivity is 1.0. One of the binds increases my sensitivity while being used, and the other two reduce my sensitivity while in use. This is a setup that I only use for specific maps, like Bonus1 on surf_reprise.

I know that this is a lot of information to take in and understand, so don't be afraid to ask questions.

For those of you who want to try a similar setup but have a mouse with fewer buttons, just omit the turn binds completely. You won't use them to replace your turns until you're surfing tier 5+, and in most situations you can use the sensitivity binds to augment your turn rather than the turn binds.

There are many people who will say that this setup is over-complicated and unnecessary, including surfers who are significantly better than me, and I would agree with that statement. I've adapted to this setup and it works very well for me, but I would not suggest such a complex setup for most people.

If you're going to make large adjustments to your configuration, please make sure you backup your configuration beforehand.

If anyone wants to see my actual configs in full, here they are:

I place these in my cfg folder and run them in console with the command "exec [filename]".
