O SKUPINĚ Pionier-Bataillon 305

1./Pionier-Bataillon. 305 - Pioniere Vor!

Pionier-Bataillon 305 was established on the 25 November 1940, in Ravensburg. It was formed from many units and received men from Pi.Btl.178 & Pi.Btl.296. The main base of the unit came from Festungs Pi.Btl.305. It would see it’s toughest fighting during the ferocious battles in the Barrikady gun factory in the northern industrial district of Stalingrad. We portray the Pioniere of the 1(Kp)./Pi.Btl. 305. This however is not just a virtual re-enactment group. But also research and study group whose members are always striving to learn more about the daily lives of the average German infanteristen and Pioniere during the second world war. As well as the study of the tactics that they employed on the battlefield.

The photograph that is the steam group avatar shows the buildings of the workers settlement of the Dzerhezinski tractor factory. The men of the 1st and 3rd companies of Pi.Btl.305 had to fight through these dominating buildings along with Gr.Rgt.578. Gren.Rgt.578 was the division spear head regiment for the attack on the 15th October 1942, the pioniere would move ahead of the grenadiere as bunker busters for this difficult offensive. The implementation of the pioniere was essential as the experienced men of the 37th Guards Rifle Division were defending this sector, and would not give up ground willingly.

Personalities of Pi.Btl.305 (Officers)

Hauptmann Wilhelm Traub Kdr. Pi.Btl.305

Wilhelm Traub (Dipl. Ing.) was born on the 14th November 1895 in Helmstedt. He was the much loved Bataillonsführer of Pi.Btl.305 which he took command of on the 16th October 1942. He started the war with Pi.Btl.22 were he would climb through the ranks to Hauptmann. Missing in action 5th January 1943 posthumously promoted to Major in 1944.

Oberzahlmeister Max Keppler Stab./Pi.Btl.305

Max Keppler was born on the 7th March 1909 in Kirchheim was the Battalion Zahlmeister (Pay Master) for Pi.Btl.305. Declared missing in Jan 1943 in Stalingrad, he would die in Russian captivity in February 1943.

Leutnant Hans Zorn 1./Pi.Btl.305

Hans Zorn was a platoon leader in 1./Pi.Btl.305, born on the 11th January 1921 in Pforzheim. He join the military on the 29th November, 1939. He would begin the war with Pi.Btl.5 before transfer to the 305.Inf.Div. He would take command of the 1st kompanie upon his arrival in Stalingrad in October 1942. Wounded on the 12 November 1942, he would however survive the war.

Oberleutnant Richard Grimm 2./Pi.Btl.305

Richard Grimm born on the 17th May 1913 Kircheim, like Staiger he began the war with Pi.Btl.45 were he would be promoted to Leutnant (01/10/1938) and later to Oberleutnant (01/08/1941) would be transferred to Pi.Btl.305 were he would server as Kompanieführer for 2./Pi.Btl.305. He would end the war as a Hauptmann.

Oberleutnant Berthold Staiger 3./Pi.Btl.305

Berthold Staiger born on the 13th March 1914 in Rottweil. He start his service with Pi.Btl.45 were he would be promoted to Leutnant. He would serve as a platoon leader in 3./Pi.Btl.305 and later after his promotion to Oberleutnant would take command of the kompanie. He was wounded in Dec 1942 and would be flown out of the pocket. He would survive the war.

Leutnant Erwin Hingst 2./Pi.Btl.305

Erwin Hingst born on the 14th September 1908 in Hameln was a platoon leader with the 1./Pi.Btl.305. Wounded in October he wuld later take over command of Richard Grimm 2./Pi.Btl.305 after Grim because to ill. Promoted to Oberleutnant MIA 5th January 1943 in Stalingrad.

"The next title due for release is the detailed history of Pionier-Bataillon 305, from its formation until its demise in Stalingrad. Tentative release date is April or May 2011. A vast amount of rare material (photos, diaries, letters, etc.) has been gathered for this book which allows an insight into the thoughts and actions of one battalion. We follow the men from a life of relative comfort in France into the dark depths of Russia, experiencing combat from a pioneer’s perspective and feeling the painful impact of every man’s death. The quality and detail of information found for this book needs to be seen to be believed. The battalion was far from being a “glamorous” unit that covered itself in medals, yet the battles in which it fought make its story worth telling."
