I was in the "regular Arma” for just one day, tearing around for fun @DidntMeanToKillYou ‘s helo when my shocking orders came in: report to Lieutenant @Quorum in Special Operations at 2000 hours.

Special Operations? Special Operations? I barely made it out of basic! I barely knew how to open my pack or look through a scope. What idiot thought I should be attached to a SpecOps squad? At 2005 hours I was still running around Supply drawing modpacks and filling out paperwork. I finally found the briefing room and talked to the first guy I saw, an impatient looking Sergeant.

"I’m Private Sprack and I was told to report to Lieutenant Quorum.”
A hard-looking man, the LT, turned and looked me over once and said, "No. No you ain’t.” The Sergeant whispered something to him. I thought I overheard the dreaded "…Commander @MrsSprack ‘s husband…”. My wife is a pretty powerful Navy officer and was the one who pulled strings to get me in the reserves. (To be honest, I think she just wanted me out of her hair for a weekend a month.) I spent more time puking than learning in Basic, and just my luck, things turned sideways in Chernarus the day I got out. Somehow I got made regular Arma. And now I’m attached to some snake-eater detachment? Maybe it is more than just weekends she wanted back.



"You’re Sergeant Sprack now. I’m Sergeant Raiju001. Sit in the back and shut up.” That’s when things got really surreal. We were going to Chernarus. Like, now. In zodiacs. To blow things up in enemy territory. Should I tell them I can barely shoot? That I only ever met any of the guys in this room playing video games with my wife, and only ever saw the face of one of them?

Apparently me talking at all wasn’t really part of the plan. Next thing I know I’m on some floating rig trying to find the switch for my night vision. Five minutes of sickening night-time speedboating later, I’m on some beach being ordered to drag a whole zodiac into the reeds myself. I can’t even find a place to grab on to it. I ♥♥♥♥ around for what felt like an eternity trying to grab what I later learned was a vehicle tow hook before I find the purpose-built drag handle. "Sprack, hurry up get that boat into the reeds,” Quorum hissed. I hauled it up the dunes and put my hands on my knees, panting.

I vaguely heard that I was in squad 1 (or was it 2?) with Sgt. Raiju001, heading to some point on the map, and everyone started walking. Or as I called it, "jogging”. "Let’s spread out and double-time it. Time is of the essence,” intoned the LT, and jogging became something that reminded me very much of Basic Training and Vomit. My rifle, not one I ever even shot before, felt like an anvil in my arms. "We gotta get those radars before our guys start the invasion.”

Two map points later and the lead guys had "eyes on” some kind of Russian-made light armor. Eyes On is what we were supposed to say if something wasn’t shooting at us. I was pretty sure "I need new underwear” would be the next call for me. Not for Sgt. Raiju001, though. Apparently he was some kind of hero from an infantry unit called "Nightmare Battalion”. Those Nightmare guys must know something about rockets because a few seconds later that vehicle was up in smoke.

We crossed the road, and a bunch of forest and fields and finally came to this fenced-in deal with all the radar domes. My squad was supposed to head left and cover one of the engineers placing demo charges. I pushed up towards the fence, and I caught a reassuring view of a couple of my guys on my right. One of them slapped me on the back, hard. So hard it knocked me forward and I fell. At the same time I saw holes tear through both of those guys.



"Who the hell was that up forward by those two enemy?” I heard over the radio in my ear. I realized there was a hole torn in the meat of my shoulder. Somebody, I couldn’t tell who in the dark, slapped some powder on it okay now it really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hurts and taped something over it and hauled me to my feet. "Squad 1 cover that tower.”

Kaboom! One radar globe imploded inside the fences. "Squad 1 circle North, we’re heading out that way. Everyone else get out of the compound, we’re going to blow the rest of these.” Kaboom!

"Ahhh, I’m down inside the compound, I’m bleeding out!” "Me too!” "Who has the medic back, I’m running out of time.”

"♥♥♥♥, its too late, I bled out. If I died, is that it, I’m out of the game?” "Yeah, that’s it.” "Well that sucks. Who blew that C4 while friendlies were inside?” "I told every to get out first.” "Well I was making my way out!”

"Well the rest of us better get moving, we don’t want to get cut off from the boats. Command, this is Quorum the objectives are destroyed but I’ve got multiple KIAs and wounded.”

"Quorum, this is Colonel @Scorch. The whole island is alert to you and mobilizing in your direction. Your exit is cut off. We’re mobilizing to get you out, but you are gonna be on your own until morning. There is a construction site that might be defensible about half a click North. I’m sorry, Quorum its the best we can do.” "Roger, Command. Okay guys, lets move out.”

After cresting a hill there was some kind of homestead or something. We approached to find it empty and an empty armored truck parked behind. Not roomy enough for all of us, and – ♥♥♥♥ – headlights appearing up the road, and tracers about 200 times faster, tearing up the rock walls of the buildings.” Another rocket and another smoking wreck, but that wouldn’t stop them this time.

"Hey there’s ATVs over here!” "Okay we gotta get outta here. Everyone who can fit, get in the truck. ATVs follow us. By the time I caught up, the truck was rolling. Raiju001 and I grabbed ATVs. I sped out but Raiju’s wouldn’t start. "Damn it, Raiju proceeding on foot.” I tried to pace him with my trike, but he told me not to wait. I felt bad about how happy I was to be told that. I sped up to the construction side, jumped out, and climbed the stairs.

It was a great tactical position, but what I was hearing told me the end was coming for all of us. "Eyes on 3 enemy on foot coming from the town, Southeast!.” "Eyes on at least 12 enemy on foot, plus an APC coming from the base North!”

"Does anybody know what time it is?” "0115” "Oh ♥♥♥♥, this night is going to be too long.” The gloom was the darkest of my life, the darkest possible I thought, and then I heard, "Tank, South!”. "Everybody inside, get away from the outer walls, cover those stairways. Somebody attract that tank, maybe I can get over there with some C4. Its probably our only chance.”

"Quorum, this is Command. Part II of the Prologue is next week.”

BRIEFING:

It was on November 6, 2014 the flashpoint that would set off the third major conflict in human history occurred. Two nuclear blasts, one at the Syrian city of Latakia, and the Iraqi city of Mosul. Both cities were flattened. Millions dead, millions more affected by fallout and nuclear climate. It would leave a permanent scar on the earth. Shortly before the blast, a team from the United States 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta recovered 2 nuclear devices from Latakia, and were subsequently killed in the blast of a third device. Upon further investigation, it was determined on the decks of the USS George HW Bush that the devices supplied to the extremists holding these devices in Latakia were of Russian origin. This situation quickly dissolved, as NATO forces lead by the US and Russian militaries were conducting aggressive campaigns in Syria, and Iraq against the unrecognized Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. Dozens of friendly fire incidents took place as the two militaries clashed in areas where forces on both sides were deployed together. The two nations quickly withdrew their militaries in the following weeks, and the remaining NATO forces and local authorities were able to quickly disarm the remaining Islamic State strongholds.

These were the first steps toward the path to war. Moderates on both sides insisted upon further investigation, but there would be no yield from the United Nations. Russia had been caught red handed. Despite the Russian government’s heavy denial of their involvement, most of the world had already made up its mind. The "Latakia Nukes,” as they were called, were found to be of modern make, fairly small warheads with astronomical yields, not cold war relics. Whether the Russian government really supplied them, history may never know.

With Russian troops being deployed in uniform to the Ukrainian front and Crimea, as well as a renewed invasion of Georgia, troop buildups in Kamchatka, and along the borders of Belarus and Finland, Russia stood posed for war. Everyone knew a disaster could not be averted, the first shots of the war had been fired, and a few short months later in March of 2015, the opening shots taking place between NATO and Russian aircraft over Kiev.




The ocean spray highlights the air in the glare of the setting sun as Delta 6-2 stands on the deck of the oil rig, their squad leader, (Quorum) opens a large orange envelope and begins reading under the dim glow of the sun. The team had been briefed on the generalities, told what equipment to bring, but their target was about to be revealed to the eager soldiers, the Georgian coast a few miles away.

You think to yourself: "This is it. We’re really going to do this.” You’ve done ops like this before, but you can’t shake the feeling of nervousness knowing what you’re actions tonight will have on the grand scale. Before, the mere idea of such an event was something that existed solely in fiction, and even then it was so often portrayed in a different time and place. Now, though, you know it’s not going to be just a story or action movie plot, but the real thing was about to kick off. The invasion of Georgia was the last straw: the U.S. is going to war with Russia in earnest, and the U.S. is making its first strike on foreign soil. You look at the men on your team; you’ve served with these guys through thick and thin, and there’s no other group you have greater confidence and trust in. However, even with this you come to the grim conclusion that, despite being told this before, you actually believe it this time: not everyone will be coming home when this is all over.

The stern voice of your squad leader (Quorum) breaks you from your thoughts:

"Alright, gentlemen. We’ll be landing on the northern coast of Georgia. The region has been occupied by the Russian military since ‘08. Our job is to ensure our guys and flyboys make it to the coast. We’ll be taking down a radar and comm station at coordinates 114-038. We get in silently, ideally sneaking along through the forests to the North, plant the charges, and blow the place before anyone even knows we’re there. Speed is critical. We’ve only got a couple hours to do this before the fleet moves in and the landings start. We are being sent in because we are the few who can get it done. We will make history tonight. Load up, gentlemen; let’s make it happen!”
