[Guide] The Ranger Handbook
The Antarian Rangers are a very specialized asset with a very generalized build. We are Scouts, Snipers, and Spies. However we are also Hunters and survivalists.

Because of this the Ranger does not fit into a traditional tribe member slot such as Armor or Weapons smith. We are our own segment with the purpose of finding out things the tribe needs to know and dealing with threats the tribe may not have resources to deal with or even know about.

With that in mind our build depends not only on the ability to fight and live in the wild, but also upon the individual Rangers needs and goals.

The purpose of this guide is to give new players interested in this play-style a condensed source to make an informed decision on how to proceed with their build.

Stats
Rangers need only a few stats to be successful. In order of priority these are...

Health – The more hit points you have, the harder you are to kill. At least 300 – 400 is best.

Fortitude – As a Ranger you are going to spend a lot of time outside and in close quarters with threats such as Titan Boa and Scorpions. Fortitude will make you more resistant to those poisons as well as the fluctuations of heat and cold during the Ark's daily cycle. 40 – 50 is best.

Carry Weight – When you're out exploring, hunting, spying and taming you will likely be alone and far from tribe support. The more you can carry, the more you can do. I've found that around 190 weight is a solid minimum standard.

Oxygen (optional) – this will allow you to stay submerged longer and swim faster. Necessary when fording rivers and diving for pearls or oil. 150 – 200 is quite effective.

Melee Damage (optional) – As with fortitude, decent melee damage can be an asset. In addition to making your spear, pike and swords hit harder, it also lets you harvest more with your hand tools. Its not truly a necessary stat, but in the edge case of finding yourself on the ground without a mount it can make all the difference between an epic trek from enemy territory to home and re-spawning.

Engrams
The equipment that Rangers use is all about what we can do with our hands. Our points are spent to let us get into and out of dangerous places without needing the support of the rest of the tribe.

Armor
Cloth & Hide – Excellent for all around weather protection. Almost no armor value.

Ghillie – Great for concealment in PvP and PvE, very little cold protection. This is where Fortitude comes in.

Fur – Vital for survival in the Snow Biome.

Weapons
Spear – all around good weapon. Low Damage, but it can keep you in meat until you make it back.

Wooden Club – Only needed if you plan make the sword.

Slingshot – Required for the Bow. Good for taming and ammo is plentiful.

Bow (Stone Arrow and Tranq Arrow) – One of the best starter weapons and still very good at later game stages. Quiet, cheap to maintain, cheap to make and cheap to feed.

Pike (optional) – Good damage and reach, but heavy.

Crossbow – An all around good weapon. With a solid 95 Damage per shot and the ability to fire underwater this is an essential Ranger tool. It requires a Smith to maintain, but this can be solved with a mounted Castoroides.

Grenade – An all around handy little hurt device. Solid in both PvP and PvE.

Metal Sword – Better damage than the Pike with less weight. Allows the use of shields in the off hand.

Longneck rifle – From the Wiki While the Longneck Rifle has a base damage of 280, all creatures aside from humans take only 70% damage from guns. This means that the Rifle only does 196 damage to creatures.
Even with the damage reduction it still deals more damage than the Crossbow and can fire the more effective Tranquilizer Darts. It can not be fired underwater.

Rocket Launcher – Normally not a weapon I would take along in my kit. However with Ballista, catapults and cannons mounted on boats and platform saddles, this weapon serves as an equalizer for the Rangers.

Compound Bow and Metal Arrow – At 202.5 Damage per shot and armor penetration the Compound Bow is the essential high end Ranger bow. In effective with Stone or Tranq arrows.

Fabricated Sniper Rifle and Advanced Sniper bullet – The only rifle that can compare to the Longneck. 165 Damage per shot (115 to creatures), eight round magazine, a built in scope with the ability to mount a silencer, this is the essential Ranger Rifle.

Traps
noisemaker tripwire – Useful in any situation where noise is your friend.

Tripwire Narcotic Trap – Can be used to build torpor in high torpor dinos or knock out dinos and players.

Improvised Explosive Device – Placed like the TNT but deals damage rather than torpor.

C4 and Detonator – a detpack that can be deployed on personnel, creatures and most structures. Deals significant damage to metal structures.

Transponder node and Tracker – useful when you want to keep tabs on someone or something, but keep out of sight.

Tools and Structures
Campfire, Standing Torch – Very effective at staving off the cold and lighting the environment.

Sleeping Bag – Cheap to make, easy to pack, and can be reclaimed if not used. An effective personal Spawn point.

Compass – This is essential Ranger kit.
In a nutshell its a floating needle compass, so East and West point the opposite of the way you would expect.

The method of properly using this type of compass can not be done within Ark, so just remember that East and West will display incorrectly. Why? Because someone on the dev team is a pedantic ass and fuck you for not spending more time outdoors you lazy asshole.

Flare Gun – A surprisingly useful method of illuminating an area or signaling.

Parachute – Essential when using fliers. Spending a long time in the sky increases the likelihood of hitting “E” while at four hundred meters, so bring along a couple.

Please note the parachute decent and orientation can not be changed in flight. You can dump a chute early and use a second to bring you down faster, but you may end up an inch shorter.
So they included a parachute that can not be properly steered... probably to match the compass that can not be properly oriented.

Bolas – Perfect for stopping small creatures. Useful when taming fliers and subduing mouthy players.

Stone / Metal Ax and pick – Useful if you end up stranded. I always keep a set around just in case.

Water Jar / Canteen – Goes without saying, running out of water sucks.

Tranquilizer Dart – an essential upgrade to the Longneck. It delivers more torpor and less damage making taming some creatures much easier.

Scuba Gear – for most Ranger operations you will probably only need the chest, mask and flippers. For cave exploration the whole set is recommended.

Optional Gear
Chitin Armor – Solid protection with plentiful ingredients.
Riot Armor – Lighter weight and more protection than Flak Armor.

Assault Rifle / Shotguns / Pistols – Effective against players, but the damage output per resource spent is very low. Coupled with the cost to repair I found them too expensive to keep. If you're swimming in resources, go for it.

[Introduction] Antarian Rangers
Greetings everyone. I've noticed some confusion about exactly who the Antarian Rangers are and what we're all about, so I thought I'd make a post to alleviate some of that.

Who are we?
The Antarian Rangers are based loosely on the Antarian Rangers of Star Wars. It's best summed up on the first page of the Wookiepedia article.[starwars.wikia.com]

"To be a Ranger meant knowing how to move in any environment. To blend in with the forest or grassland, to sail, to swim, to dive, to pilot. To be masters of our surroundings. We were good spies, good warriors, very adept at intrusion and escape."
―Tyria Sarkin on being an Antarian Ranger

What makes us different from other tribes?
To put it plainly, our play style.

We don't use large mounts or pets. No Rexes, Gigas, Brontos, Paracers, Plesiasurs, Mosasaurs, etc. Our largest mounts are Stego's, Trikes and Argents.

We favor traps, tripwires, clever use of the environment and long range shooting.

We use guerrilla style combat, sniping, infiltration, exfiltration and stealth rather than high intensity attacks with giga's and cannons.

When operating down range we put up a temporary Forward Operating Base, accomplish our mission, then destroy the base upon exit. We don't leave traces of our passing in the field. This both keeps the map from becoming cluttered and maintains the sovereignty of the Tribe who controls that Area.

Our play-style is Hard Mode. A Ranger must play smart or be killed quickly. For this reason our Tribe is not for everyone and we expect a high turnover.

That eventuality is built into our method of operation.

Okay, so what do you do?
Our operations will eventually grow to include all manner of activities. These can be summed up in five areas

Big Game Hunting – hunting dangerous prey such as Alpha Predators and Players known to be of exceptional skill.

Exploration – Cave and ocean diving searching for the best blueprints we can obtain to better our equipment and make us better hunters.

Scouting – Finding the best possible creatures for hunting and taming by ourselves and other tribes.

Husbandry – Breeding the best mounts we can for ourselves and other tribes on the server.

Crafting – We are looking for the best blueprints we can find and we intend to supply those things that redily fit into the Rangers play style. This means Longneck and Sniper Rifles, bows, and tools as well as ghillie, fur and hide armors.

Our Goals

Long Term

To build a cadre of experienced players across US/EU/AUS time zones that are willing to teach new players, and assist other tribes with their operations. Due to our play style we expect total permanent numbers to not likely to be more than 11 or so.

Obtain blueprints for the best gear we can make and supply that to ourselves and others.

Short Term
Our main base is in a constant state of improvement and refinement. Our taming pen is completed, with our Hatchery, nursery and cooking stations under construction. The goal is to have construction completed within the next couple of weeks.
Once we have completely refined our main base, we intend to use it as our hub of operations and a place where we can introduce new players to a wide variety of game mechanics. This will include, but may not be limited to:

Breeding
Navigation
Taming
Ranger Style PvPvE

How do we relate to other Tribes?

In a nutshell we are like any other tribe with the exception that the Antarian Rangers are not a rival to anyone. We will eventually PvPvE with and against anyone, however we do not see any tribe as our enemy. Any player from any tribe may come and go as they please. You are free to join or leave at your leisure.

If you do join and earn rank within the Rangers, if you leave you will still retain your Ranger rank and will be reinstated to that rank when you return.

For this reason, alliances with the Rangers is largely irrelevant as we are already your ally. If you need assistance our goal is to be able to provide it.

What about new players?

New players to the server are always accepted. Our goal is to assist new players in leveling, honing their skills and equipping them to be valuable members of a tribe if they chose to leave.

Any assistance in this goal from other tribes in both recruiting and training is greatly appreciated.

I hope this helps everyone better understand who we are.
Good Hunting.
