U.S-Russia relations have not been good since 1991,
1991-2000 = Russia was essentially a puppet of the United States, Yeltsin was taking direct orders from Bush and Clinton, this is acknowledged fact by now.
2000-2008 = Bush and Putin were friendly to one another but as said in " The Putin Interviews ", Putin often knew Bush was lying to his face and relations were rocky behind the scenes, nonetheless the U.S/Russia cooperated heavily and direct threats/confrontation weren't often made.
2008-2012 = Obama and Medvedev got along well enough, the 2008 Georgian War caused a short uproar but besides that no big issues.
2012 - 2016 = The protests crackdown in Russia denounced by the Yankees, the " LGBT crackdown " denounced by them, the Syrian Civil War standoff in 2013, the Sochi fiasco, the U.S supported overthrow of the Ukrainian government and the Syrian Proxy War that started heavily in 2015 with U.S backed CIA led rebels directly killing Russian soldiers and vice versa led to very cold relations between the U.S and Russia. Both sides had to act tough and throw insults back and forth.
2016 - 2018 = Trump talked relatively nice about Russia during his campaign so the Russian Government was slightly hopeful that something would change, but as evident, nothing did. So U.S-Russian relaitons are the same as they were during the Obama administration if not a bit worse.
Putin has threatened the West with nukes a lot and the West has threatened Russia in Syria, none of this will ever occur though of course, it's just superpowers trying to one-up each other.
Keep in mind, it's not only Democrats with a deep hatred of Russia. The Republicans in America still view Russia as an enemy that needs to be curbed and destroyed economically for the success of U.S foreign policy, the only American politicians who seem to not hate Russia are libertarian types like Rand Paul.
It's "America first" or nothing...
I would say, it's somehow the slogan to every superpower who tends to get more powerful.
About the nuclear threats, yes it's all bluff. A nuclear war would only lead to the mutual destruction of each opponent ; that's why it's called "nuclear deterrent". We can still see it nowadays with the ukrainian war, the only way they can physically fight each other it's through proxy wars.
- American Boomers, or others who grew up during the cold war era who had to take part in emergency drills in grade school where they hid under desks. Viewing Russia as an enemy who was going to wipe them out at any time was deeply ingrained in their psyche.
- Neoliberal/Neocon types and sexual degenerates who hate the new traditionalist Russia because they're ideologically incompatible with the new Sodom and Gomorrah values of the West.
In both cases, the hate can be attributed to Russophobia.
In the middle, which is most of America, you got every day average dudes who work an honest job for a living to feed their families who ask the question of "Why should I hate Russia"? And "What did Russia ever do to harm me?". Rather than come up with a comprehensive list of behavior and infractions committed by Russia against regular Americans, their response is to call anyone raising these questions a Russian bot.
The entire American media apparatus has failed to give me a single compelling reason for why I should hate Russia, or Putin.
Same thing applies in (Western) Europe (paragraphs 5 & 6) :
Trying to argue on Russia = Russian propagandist
Trying to argue on climate change = Climate skeptic
Trying to argue on Covid' vaccin = Conspiracy theorist
Trying to argue on immigration = Xenophobic
Trying to argue on Islam/islamization = Islamophobic
Trying to argue on ethnic crimes = Racist
Trying to argue on the decadence of our civilization = Boomer, Reactionary
etc
