In the anime SDF-1 Macross, there are advanced transforming fighter aircraft called "variable fighters" (hence "VF"). These fighters are organized in military fashion in "squadrons" with their own leaders for each unit, all coming together under the supreme command of Skull Leader, with Skull Squadron being the most talented/expert group of pilots and variable fighters (using the superior VF-1S units instead of the standard VF-1A fighters or the VF-1J fighters often reserved for leaders of lower status squadrons).
