After the untimely death of Governor James Burchill Richardson from Smallpox, a special election was held in the State of South Carolina to elect a new Governor.

James C. Calhoun was selected by the Democratic-Republican Party to stand as their candidate and won with a resounding 65% of the vote across the State, where he is extremely popular and carried in the Presidential election.

Mr Calhoun will be inaugurated as the 42nd Governor of South Carolina next week and will take up residence in the Governor's Executive Mansion in Columbia.

Mr Henry Clay is expected to be the new House Minority Leader.
