Senatorial Positions Explained
Consul
- The office of Consul is the highest elected office in the Government of the Roman Republic and is recruited from the ranks of Senators. They act as the representative heads of the Republican Government and are the highest civil and military magistrates. The two Consuls rule together by mutual consensus, meaning that only when they agree with each other can they exercise the authority given to them and their office. Two Consuls are elected together, to serve for a one-month term. Each Consul is given veto power over their colleague and the officials are to alternate every two weeks in who takes precedence. A potential candidate for the rank of Consul will have to of already served a term in the Roman Senate before attempting to run for the Consulship.

Censor
- The Censor is an officer who is responsible for maintaining the census, supervising morality and overseeing certain aspects of the government's finances. If one of the censors died, his colleague resigned, and two new censors were chosen to replace them. Both Censors had to be elected on the same day and accordingly if the voting for the second was not finished in the same day, the election of the first was invalidated, and a new election has to be held. The Censorship is regarded as one of the highest dignities in the state, it was a "sacred magistracy", to which the deepest reverence was due. The high rank and dignity with which the Censorship possesses was due to the various important duties gradually entrusted to it and especially to its possessing of the regimen morum, or "general control over the conduct and the morals of the citizens". In the exercise of this power, they were regulated solely by their own views of duty, and were not responsible to any other power in the state. The duties of the Censors may be divided into three classes, all of which are closely connected with one another, the Census, or register of the citizens and of their property, in which included the reading of the Senate's list of members. The regimen morum, or "keeping of the public morals." The administration of the finances of the state, under which are classed the superintendence of the public buildings and the erection of all new public works. They also have the ability to take note of worthy members of the Republic that could be suited for the Senate or other positions of equal rank and have the authority to expel members of the Senate and appoint new ones in their place if they feel it is appropriate to do so.

Urban Praetor
- The Urban Praetor’s main role is to run the day-to-day affairs of the City of Rome. They are the City Manager of Rome. If they want to call a lockdown they can. The Urban Praetor is the highest authority in the city limits of Rome. They may not leave the city during their term. They are also the highest ranking officer in the city's defenses. They do not outrank a Consul, who may remove troops from them. However, a Consul cannot remove them from command of Rome's defences unless granted Senate Approval. The Urban Praetor has many duties concerning the development of Rome. They along with the Foriegn Praetor act in the nation's best interest, and they serve the Senate, Consuls, and People.

Foreign Praetor
- The Foreign Praetor is Rome's highest diplomat. They, along with the Consuls are allowed to deal directly with foriegn nation on behalf of the Senate. They outrank legates if they are ever on the battlefield. However, these diplomats keep to themselves most of the time. They can also govern provinces on behalf of the Consuls. They do not have domestic power like their fellow Urban Praetor, but together they act in the nation's best interest.

Plebian Tribune
- The Tribune holds a position that represents all land owning people of Rome which are not of noble birth, the Plebeians. Tribunes have the power to convene the Plebeian Council and to act as its president, which also gives them the right to propose legislation before it. They have the power to veto actions taken by magistrates and specifically to intervene legally on behalf of plebeians. The Tribune can also summon the Senate and lay proposals before it, they can also veto any act proposed to or by the Senate. The Tribune's power, however, is only in effect while they are within Rome. Their ability to veto does not affect regional governors. They are also untouchable, in the sense that any assault on their person, disruption of duty or disregard of their right to veto is prohibited and is punishable by death.

Aedile
- Based in Rome, the two Aediles are responsible for the maintenance of public buildings which includes the repair and preservation of temples, sewers and aqueducts and roads. They are tasked with the superintendence, organization and regulation of the public games and festivals as well as those given by themselves and private individuals. They also have powers to enforce public order. The office is generally held by young men intending to follow the cursus honorum to high political office, traditionally after their Quaestorship but before their Praetorship. It is not a compulsory part of the cursus honorum and hence a former Quaestor could be elected to the Praetorship without having held the Aedileship. However, it is an advantageous position to hold because it demonstrates the aspiring politician's commitment to public service, as well as giving them the opportunity to hold public festivals and games, an excellent way to increase their name recognition and popularity.

Quaestor
- The Quaestors are a type of public official in the cursus honorum system who supervise the treasury and financial affairs of the state, its armies and its officers. The Quaestors tasked with financial supervision are also called “quaestores aerarii”, because they oversaw the “aerarium” or public treasury in the Temple of Saturn. Some Quaestors are assigned to work in the City of Rome, while others are assigned to the staffs of generals or serve as lieutenant governors in the provinces. Still others are assigned to oversee military finances and whilst in the provinces their responsibilities could also include military recruitment. The office of Quaestor is the first official post of the cursus honorum. By achieving election as Quaestor, a Roman would earn the right to sit in the Senate and begin to progress along the standard sequence of offices that made up a career in public service.

Princeps Senatus
- The Princeps Senatus is the first member by precedence of the Roman Senate. Although officially out of the cursus honorum, this office brought enormous prestige to the Senator holding it. It is selected from patrician Senators already holding office. The successful candidate had to be a patrician with an impeccable political record, respected by their fellow Senators. The rank of Princeps Senatus is one of great honour, they have the privilege of speaking first on the topic presented by the presiding magistrate. This gives the position great dignitas as it allows the Princeps Senatus to set the tone of the debate in the Senate. The office also holds the prerogatives of the presiding magistrates and additional powers, namely, the summoning and adjourning the Senate, deciding its agenda, deciding where the session should take place, imposing order and other rules of the session, meeting in the name of the Senate with embassies of foreign countries and writing, in the name of the Senate, letters and dispatches.

Senator/Magistrate
- The Senators/Magistrates that make up the Senate are the prime legislation drafting individuals responsible for representing the people of the Roman Republic in Government. Their main role as members of the Senate is to vote on proposals set before them and to propose bills themselves. They also act as advisors of the Consuls and can recommend a particular action to be taken. The positions are of high prestige and social standing. A term in the Senate lasts one month.
