Galilei Donna Review (by Darth)
What i thought was going to be a decent anime (that i would love) ended up one of my alltime favorite anime while surpassing my expectations.

The Setup

warning: contains first episode soilers... like the spoiling the majority of the plot in the first episode is really a spoiler at all HAH!!

It start in a in an arctic mining town reminiscent of an Alaskan oil drill site. yes, it's safe to assume that this stuff they are digging up is their world's equivalent of black gold. you then get this air ship that resembles a fish... why? ask the show later on. the fiship then starts to deploy some mechs... i think i know where this is going. no the mechs do not look like fish but close, the mechs drop on to the mining facility and start to trash it, then proceed to steal the ore form the mine. yah we got some of THOSE themes here.

so now the intro rolls and the next thing we see is... wait your telling me there is no annoying intro!!! good so after the raid scene we see a girl, our star Hozuki Ferrari (yes Ferrari as in the car!!!) on a bike type thing, start to think she is late... WRONG another flying fish appears to be chasing. she presses a button and off she flies with rockets out of the back of her bike? so then **** opening credits. So i was wrong about the placement of the opening credits but give me a break they were not where i expected them. i will talk about the opening later.

so opening credits roll and next we see Kazuki Ferrari (yes hozuki's sister) being called in a Home Ec class. kazuki's not there (what a surprise) she happens to be in the infirmary listening to music on her phone... with a man sneaking behind her, (PEDOBEAR ALERT). you guess what happens.

next we have Hazuki (no not a spelling error, Ha vs Ho) drinking with friends and you know the rest by now.

so now we see them in the police station talking with the cops about there each individual incidences mom shows up and in a back room she starts lecturing them on "living a good life" and "not living a morally bankrupted one" dad shows and now i get who the favorite is, and who they descend form Galileo form. The cops decide to watch the home, but well of course the family is fractured, so the cops plot and we assume the plan is to go to a safe house. Not for long some good for nothing pirates show up to ask the family directly about Galileo's inheritance. oh so these guy's don't seem to have gotten the memo that someone tried to abduct them. hozuki is in the attic when this happens, oh did i mention that the cops took them home to gather there things. so Hozuki is in the attic and the pirates attack (but they're not bad pirates think Jack Sparrow) Hozuki sees the the family hostage and goes to the basement... OK THAT IS A LARGE BASEMENT, and gets in her Fiship that she built form plans that (spoilers, biting tongue) she made with Galileo later in the series(fails to not spoil...). she then proceed to go ham on the pirates to find that the cops have now arrested her family on manufactured charges of "theft of resources."

now hozuki is flying in a weponized fiship that happens to be a goldfish... ok. she goes to save her family from the jail bait with a mecha that drops down in to the police presinct, is all this weaponry and mech tech standardized in this world? so she save her family after her father makes a diversion in her mecha and the escape without their mother... so now we get credits... wow what a first episode, or 2... think i spoiled the rest of the setup.

The Opening

ok let me say i was impressed by this opening maybe not as impressed as i'd want to be. i mean it sounds good catchy and well all around a good op... but at time yah it's sorta annoying. not really like Nyan Cat, that is just plain annoying but more like melodically annoying. what i mean by this is when you have 2 different sound frequencies that don't quite mesh but sound interesting together... not like a sour note but like hard rock guitar and a classical flute 2 types of sound that don't quite mesh right but not quite. any why stepping way from the rant without caring if you got it or not, the animation is cute and in sync to the music as well and anyone that is not Kyoto Ani can.

The Plot

maybe not the most original but its got to be the one of most involving.
the plot goes "you have this group of 3 teens going around in a massive goldfish and collecting moon sketches. while being chased by an evil organization and at times a band of pirates out to get said evil organization. other times the band of pirates actually helps the Galileo Sisters (like the old saying the enemy of my enemy is my friend). now the said evil organization is a producer of energy and has a massive monopoly on said energy. this evil organization also happens to have the power to make the Galileo Sisters world wide fugitives. wow that is evil."

man did is it me or did this show kinda get a little dark? but yah not the most original but has to be one of the best executed.

The Characters

Hozuki: your main character, and my favorite of the show, cute and young while mature, a genius, mellow and caring
Hazuki: a secondary main character, the oldest sister of Hozuki, high strung, "mature" but immature, not stupid but not smart average more or less
Kazuki: a secondary main character, anxious, does not like change, and does not want to leave, but does not have a strong will or drive, receives some of the most character development.

as far as the rest of the character list goes there are a few strong ones and a few weak ones, but for a the most part average.

The Animation

the animation for the most part is smooth, the styling its wonderful and the typical CG does make its appearance but is not used for EVERYTHING (like Ars Nova).

Final Verdict

its a very good show and worth a the check out. the plot not very original but has a unique twist on most everything. this includes a humongous surprise toward the end and a which came first/where did it come from type question. though i does not have the best characters they seem to mesh and get each other while nothing really seems forced. lastly if i had a bone to pick it would be a spoiler so i will leave it.

recommended anime with a score of 9.82/10
