I had to switch from the Families Beta to the Stable branch and back again to get in-game notifications for taking screenshots working again. Now screenshots and their notifications are working, but it's very scuffed: I can take a few successive screenshots, but if I go too long between screenshots, the first few times I press F12 nothing happens, I have to hold the key or tap it repeatedly before a screenshot will actually take now.

that's exactly what was happening to me

Same, can't take screenshots in any games after option to Recording beta. Didn't know about the tapping/holding. In my case, i have resorted to placing markers and then exporting that frame from recorded video after the fact (thank you, Steam devs, for actually adding this feature along with the clipping! <3)
