How do you start local network game transfer?
I know it's a dumb question, but I've been looking on how to *actually* start the process of game transferring to my Steam Deck but haven't found out where to do so. I have both my PC Steam client and Steam Deck to beta channels and have the default setting on, but I've found no button or option to transfer it. I've even tried to download a couple games on my Deck that were already installed on my PC but it wasn't transferring.

I'm probably dumb, but how do I actually initiate it? My PC is through ethernet and my Deck is through wifi, both on the same router though, if that matters.

Stuck in the same boat as you, did you ever figure it out?

Not yet. Gave up as researching it did nothing since this is still new, just waiting for somebody to respond LOL

Quick question did you already try initiating the download through your deck while your desktop was on wi-fi as oppose to ethernet? That is what I did and it worked apparently.

My deck is on wireless, and my PC is ethernet, and I had no issues transferring games between both. Have one with an installed game and the other doesn't.. Then be in client beta on both, and opt for yourself or others (on same LAN) and then download a game on the other client that is already fully installed on the other. You'll receive a popup notification stating that a local transfer is happening. One client will state "downloading" the other will state "Transfering local game" or something along the lines of that.

Unfortunately I don't have a wifi chip in my PC so switching to wifi on my desktop isn't possible.

Alright, nevermind got it working except with a different game. I was trying to transfer The Evil Within to my Deck and it wouldn't transfer, but now I'm transferring KOF 15 just fine. Perhaps it's just not available with all games for some reason?

It worked fine for me, just started the install on the steam deck and it grabbed it over the local network.
Probably tough due to differing save locations, but it would be great for save games to be transferred with the local install to the steam deck (for non cloud save games is the use case)

From my testings it seems to be working only if the game is installed in the first game library location of your client (C:\program files...), additional paths don't seem to be checked for now.

I tried with Control and it worked. On steam deck, I found the game and hit install but it didn't pop up with anything saying it was transferring locally. But checked the download tab on steam deck and saw a banner saying it was transferring locally. I'm wondering if it's just a lack of notification in the UI. Now I just need to test if mods will also transfer with files.

From my testing, it appears banz99 is correct. It only seems to do it from the local steam installation folder on the host PC, not added steam folders. I hope this is fixed as I prefer to run a light boot drive, as I imagine many do, and have my games on another drive or array.

I have steam installed on my boot drive but my library is installed on another drive. Is this the same thing you're talking about or something different? Genuinely curious

Yes! I have steam installed on my boot drive but all my games are all installed in another library on a RAID5 of mechanical disks for read performance. From what I have found, currently steam will not local transfer games from non default install location, which makes the feature far less usable in my opinion and situation.

Ah okay! Still weird cause I was able to transfer a game from my library to my deck, even though steam is on my boot drive. Though the library is a NVME drive
