IMPORTANT GAME FIX
Today the entire game system for Half-Life 2 was updated for the 20 year anniversary. As a result when attempting to connect to a deathmatch server you will get "error. the server is running an older version of the game. I order to play on any server you will have to set your game to beta mode.
1. Open Steam
Launch the Steam client on your computer.
2. Go to Your Library
In the Steam Library, locate Half-Life 2: Deathmatch in your list of games.
3. Access the Game Properties
Right-click on Half-Life 2: Deathmatch and select Properties from the context menu.
4. Navigate to the Betas Tab
In the Properties window, go to the Betas section.
5. Opt into a Beta
You'll see a dropdown menu labelled Select the beta you would like to opt into prerelease version
Your game will update and you should be able to play after that.
