Hello there, fellow fa/tg/uys, /v/eterans, /co/mpatriots and m/a/gicians! As you may or may not remember, we had quite a shindig going on here! However, due to the time of many of the DMs being consumed by outside sources like college and the like, we had to close our doors for some small period of time. NOW WE'RE BACK THOUGH! I hope you've had a chance to go over the starting guide that was posted last time and have started reading the books. I've been testing some programs that can be used to play and I've come up with a few options for us. They are all free to use.

Players, which of these are used is to be ultimately decided by the DM, but check these out and see which you like best. DMs, check out which you'd like to use for your players.

The three main programs are actually very similar. For voice chat: DMs will probably use Ventrilo, or Skype. There's also Google Talk and even Steam itself. For dice rollers: http://rolz.org/?p=group and AIM are options if the DM doesn't use one of the main three.

MapTool

MapTool is from RPTools, which provide many small programs for gamers. MapTool is likely the easiest to use, between downloading and the slight learning curve. The phrase "easy to use, difficult to master" comes to mind.

Some MapTool attributes include:

• Extensive map support
o Line of Sight functionality (Upload an map image, mark where the walls are and the players won't see any NPCs behind the walls)
o Day/Night vision settings.
o Fog of War
o Grid support
o Distance check tools (For ranged, movement, blast\burst\cone, etc)
o Whiteboard

• Tokens (Character images) with attributes.
• Initiative tool
• Chat
• Public & Private dice rolling
• Macros for instant rolling (Setup your attacks and rolls ahead of time)
• Built-in libraries or upload your own.
• Collapsible panes
• "Map Explorer" tool for DMs to keep track of all items on the map
• Easy to learn, plus many tutorials available.

OpenRPG+

OpenRPG+ is a much used application from a few years ago. Official support has waned but it's interface is great and it can't be beat for character-related customization and ease of use. Once you get used to it. Requires Python and wxPython to be installed before installation. Both and a installation guide are included in the download, as well as a sample character node for instant rolling.

If you install, follow the guide exactly. There are multiple versions of all three included programs, and the pack contains the versions that are compatible with each other. Also skip the updates it asks to check for.

Some OpenRPG+ attributes include:

• Map support
o Fog of War
o Grid support
o Whiteboard

• Chat with additional features
o Spellchecker
o Links certain words to the 3.5 SDR
• Extremely customizable nodes (for rolling, information storage, etc) with tree system (for organization)
• Tokens (Character images).
• Initiative tool
• Public & Private dice rolling
• Tabbed panes
• Easy to learn and use after initial installation
o Difficulty of use can be very high if it doesn't install properly the first time

TTopRPG

TTopRPG is a lightweight version of the previous two programs. Its focus is much more obviously on combat and quick sessions. This is fine, except that the interface isn't nearly as easy to navigate and isn't as intuitive. There are videos on the site showcasing some of its abilities.

o Fog of War
o Grid support
o Whiteboard

• Chat
• Tokens (Character images).
• Extensive Initiative tools
• Sound support for wav files (Add sounds for attacks, when a turn is over, etc. ...I think)
• Public & Private dice rolling
• Tabbed panes
• Easy to use, but an unintuitive interface makes for a slight difficulty curve
