But honestly it was my exposure to the Steam Anime communities that really got me interested in knowing and seeing more Japanesy stuff. I'm still into a lot of different things but Anime has definetely become one of my main focusses for enjoyment.
Btw, check out Inuyasha if you have not heard of it. It's a longer running show but the characters are all likable and it fits the all ages category.

fortunitely streaming and anime are more mainstream, i remember a time i could only buy DVD's that were outrageously expensive for like 6 episodes at a time... so much has changed since then
I think I didn't really get into it until the mid to late 90s with shows like Cowboy Bebop and Trigun and the movies like Ghost in the Shell and Princess Mononoke.
I enjoyed it before that, but those were the ones that got me really hooked.
