Video games can often cause conflict between each other, in the same way that you will get people loyal to one games console criticizing another. Two huge up and coming games which both have these loyal fans behind them are Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3. Both of these games are pedigree first person shooters and come from a highly proven franchise with their predecessors showing just how well these games sell and how amazing they are. And with a background like this, both games will have a lot to live up to. However because both of these titles are very highly anticipated, they will have no trouble flying off the shelves come this Christmas – the real question is which of these games will come out on top and be the best seller in the festive period.

Modern Warfare 3 comes from the series of Call of Duty Modern Warfare games from Infinity ward. Many people know that Treyarch also have a say in titles from the series every other year, such as World at War and Black ops – but these games are not as good as the ones that come from the studios of Infinity Ward. So with it being time this year for Infinity Ward to take their turn at creating a game, and also the pressures coming from Battlefield 3, this game is going to be huge, and from the hype already surrounding MW3 you can be sure of a quality title.

The Battlefield series is not as well known as the Call of Duty series by the general public; however it does have a very loyal following by their fans who will constantly criticize other games within this genre. The game play on Battlefield is a lot more difficult than that of Call of Duty – where anyone can pick up the controller and within a few hours of game play can be having fun both on and offline, whereas in Battlefield the game play is hugely tactical, and it is pretty much set in stone that as soon as you go onto the game for the first time; you are going to be killed by the hardcore fan boys. While the fact that the game is hard and it takes a while to get good at may be beneficial to some people, others will only want to play on a game where they can pick it up and play like everyone else; which is something the Modern Warfare developers have perfected to the tee.

We think that Modern Warfare 3 will be the best selling game of Christmas 2011 because of its sheer popularity, and many people already have the addiction that the online gaming side of the previous games has given them. Many people already know that one of the hardest things about the Call of Duty series is being able to put the controller down because you often find yourself playing so well; in Battlefield 3 however, this will not be the case, and the hardcore players may very well scare off the newbies.

We’ve seen trailers, we’ve heard rumors and now we have some confirmation to these rumors. On May 13th when Kotaku dropped the ball on MW3 information some were curious if some or any of it was true. No less than 7 hours later “Fourzerotwo” also known as Robert Bowling (Creative strategist of the Modern Warfare franchise) made a tweet stating, “A lot of hype & a lot of leaked info on #MW3, some still accurate, some not. To avoid spoiling the experience, I’d wait for the real reveal.” With this reveal trailer that hit May 23rd during game 4 of the NBA Western Conference Finals it confirmed a few locations stated in the leak, as well as characters.

“Fourzerotwo” has revealed information that the Survival Spec Ops mode is indeed real. Very few lucky writers of popular sites have had the privilege to play the epic new mode; stating that there are kamikaze dogs and enemies that run at you with explosives on them. There has been confirmation of Juggernauts, but not just one type. Included will be many types of enemies that you will have to fight waves and waves off until they finally triumph over you. They concluded to stating you can give in-game currency to each other and purchase items to hold off foes. This new Spec Ops mode will be the “Modern Warfare Zombies mode” for those with an appetite to play a similar game type from Black Ops and World at War known as Zombies. Spec Ops Survival mode will have its own ranking system and killstreak unlocks as well as unlocking new weapons and gear.

The crowd popularizing Zombies is small, but not that small. Many gamers tend to play Zombies, as well as being fun to party up with 3 friends for quite a few hours, it’s also a good relief from multiplayer. To conclude, Modern Warfare 3 is set out to be a great title for this year with new modes to feature and keep players busy for a long time. If you are like me, you are anticipating greatly the November release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. In the past month, the majority have been focusing on the game and any released or rumored information I can dig up. Unfortunately, there are still many questions in the air over nearly every aspect of the game from the campaign and the new Survival Spec Ops mode to the online multiplayer and the progressively less controversial Elite service. Although Robert Bowling, Creative Strategist over at Infinity Ward, has been answering followers’ questions here and there on his Twitter page (@fourzerotwo), he took the liberty to set up a Q&A onReddit.com to address your concerns. Most of the discussions are bickering between Call of Duty players like you and I; a completely wasted opportunity. However, here are a few exerts from the very long thread to save you some time:


Q: Despite Call of Duty being a team based game the gameplay encourages and rewards lone-wolves who ignore the objectives for kills, what’s being done about that? (t3hb4tman)

A: I completely agree and we have changed a lot of how XP, match bonus, challenges, rewards, and other incentives are distributed in objective gameplay, much on how we are encouraging gun on gun gameplay in TDM modes, in objective modes we are making it so being an objective focused player in objective gametypes [sic]. [...] Its not all about kills, we have to reward the defender of a bomb site, the flag runner, and the guy covering the flag runner, more so than the guy just getting kills and never going near the objective points. I read you loud and clear and while I can’t go into further detail, this has been addressed.
