Ice War
(Trad / Speed)
Canada

Albums:
  • Ice War (2017)
  • Manifest Destiny (2018)
  • Defender, Destroyer (2020)
  • Sacred Land (2021)
  • Beyond the Void (2022)

Kicking things off we have a solo project from a dude who has been in a couple dozen different bands around Canada. His bandcamp page has a boatload of smaller singles and EPs including a boatload of neat song covers, but for today we'll focus mostly on the regular album releases. Recording quality is often a little rough, closer to the sort you'd hear via demos, but it fits the trad / kinda nwobhm vibe most of the tracks carry. That being said, the higher than usual quantity of releases feels like maybe a tad more time could be spent trimming the fat on a few tracks here and there. Still overall it's pretty solid stuff, plus it always adds bonus when bands record a bunch of pro-native / anti-colonialist content on top of the usual "christianity sucks" stuff. The latest EP, Venom, drops at the end of this month as well, and it sounds like he's taking a step up in recording quality. It's quite a noticeable difference in a positive way.

Dark Meditation
(Trad Metal, Death Rock)
USA

Albums:
  • Polluted Temples (2022)

Halloween may have been a couple weeks ago, but why not fight the onslaught of christmas carols with some darker and almost "spooky" content for a little longer? Dark Meditation is heavy, and metal, but their style is split nearly half and half with a gothy death rock sound that they've managed to blend in perfectly for a pretty unique groove of their own. I suppose one could say they share equal elements of Venom, The Sisters of Mercy, and some dashes of the Black and Glam subgenres for good measure. The production and mixing are icing on the cake, with a delightful balance of crisp and fuzz that you can just feel sounds like it's "supposed to". They appear to play quite a bit in their home region around Seattle, check 'em out if you get the chance.

Virvum

(Technical Death Metal)

Switzerland

Albums:
  • Illuminance (2016)

Virvum is a Band from Switzerland playing Technical Death Metal.

I was quite surprised with that band back when I discovered them during the time I was digging into tech-death.

Interestingly they did not release any new material since then, which is quite a pity as I consider them outstanding within Tech-Death. A very melodic yet playful style in Tech-Death that is technically impressive yet doesn't sacrifice its accessibility.

The titular song of their full-length is arguably a prime-example of what I consider a "good" and healthy approach to the genre and I highly recommend that you try that track if you want to give them an honest chance.
Considering the pretty tactful style they're going with I consider it strange that this band hasn't really gotten as success as other big players in the genre.

Cool release, and a strong recommendation for people who otherwise wouldn't really bother with the genre.

Grond

(Death Metal)

Russia

Albums:
  • Howling from the Deep(2013)
  • Worship the Kraken (2016)

Grond is a band from Russia that plays Death Metal.

I think Grond are a really cool russian project that does Death Metal really well and happens to pull off a bit of a more modern sound while remaining heavily rooted in the OSDM territory.

Their "Cosmic Devonian" LP is arguably their best release due to superior production compared to "Worship the Kraken", but I'm generally not a huge fan of the vocal production on that full-length. Doesn't sound bad or anything, its just much better on the LP. Nothing beats a raw and more grounded sound in that kind of Death Metal and "Cosmic Devonian" has the upper hand here.

Anyways, as far as the rest of the material is concerned, I think that Grond is a really solid approach to Death Metal. "Howling from the Deep" is too groovy for my taste but their later material is much better in that regard.
Very fun to listen to, with a plethora of exciting riffs and the trademark grittiness of the genre.

I'd argue that they're also a good band to show to people who are still looking to get more into the OSDM side of Death Metal, as this is less rough and tacky than the old classics.
