The « Bataillon de Marins de la Garde Impériale » is a unit attached with the Imperial Guard, officialy formed by decree in 1804, while Napoléon is sacred Emperor the 2nd December of 1804.
The batallion fought in many of the great napoleonic battles and through history showed fidelity and devotion to the Emperor, France and the Grande Armée.
This batallion has been noticed in many times by his versatility, adaptation capacity and its multiple presence on all wars against different coalitions.
The « Marins de la Garde » purposes is clear, they were supposed to serve in a campaign against the United Kingdom. Quartered at Boulogne's Camp from where the Invasion Army would embark to cross the English Channel, Napoléon saw in it an Elite unit who would be able to supervise the inexperimented crew of the warship, Because the early french officers were noble and faced the consequences of the Revolution.

It has been necessary to train men with high temper, capable of fighting on sea and earth. To hope joining les Marins de la Garde, you had to be older than 25 year old, and be 1,78m to 1,84m tall, they were taller than most people at this era, know to read and write, show good discipline, and participated in at least 3 campaigns of the War of Liberty.

The training of these men were hard like the rest of the Imperial Guard. They learned to fight on ships (reloading cannon, boarding a ship, repairing a ship under enemy fire) but they also learned how to fight in a Battleline with all the formations that comes with it, reloading a musket.
The invasion of the United Kingdom by the french never happened, and the defeat at Trafalgar and the destruction of the French fleet, The batallion had to fight on foot as an Elite Infantry, or as a support for military engineering, or in artillery companies.

Their help was really precious because they saved more than once their comrades on the battlefield by bringing their military engineering skills (improvised bridges and other stuff to allow the « Grand armée » to move.

Despite the fact that they were used as reserve or support, they participate in all campaigns of Napoléon.

The Marins finished the napoleonic era with apotheosis during the Battle of Waterloo, by covering the french retreat standing next to the Old Guard (Grenadiers and Chasseurs de la Vieille Garde)
