CPU Gouvearnors, what and how to:
Governors can be thought of as pre-configured power schemes for the CPU.
The default one is ondemand which in itself is not so bad, it "wakes" the CPU to its full capacity whenever it needs it. But it is unfortunate that Games does not always use 100% CPU, therefore you will get FPS(and lag) spikes, one option is to set manually the gouvernor to performance. Please not that this doesn't bring improvements for everyone.
It's easy to install, press Ctrl + Alt + T and paste:
sudo apt-get install indicator-cpufreq && indicator-cpufreq
after that you will see a new icon, click on that and you will get:

You should click on performance when you are playing games and set it beck to ondemand when you are surfing.

I should note that in Ubuntu one can install 'indicator-cpufreq' to do the same thing but without a script. Pinned but I am not going to add it to the existing script. Too complicated and requires root.

meh, how come I didn't knew...ar all costs sis you see any improvement in performannce when runnin with performance gouvernor?

I personally see no improvement. Then again, TF2 doesn't use that much of my CPU to begin with.

I forgot you have an i7, on my i5 I saw around 10 fps improvement, however i use hardware lightning and shadowing, maybr that's why.
