If you are for whatever reason not happy with your current Linux distribution, don't give up but try another distribution.

Here is my recommendation: Mageia (www.mageia.org).

It is a mature distribution (formerly known as Mandrake, then Mandriva) - but now independent from Mandriva and driven by a big, international community of volunteers.

Mageia is very user friendly with it's mature "Control Center" to tweak your system, configure hardware or software if necessary. You can mount disks, configure network or parental control... via a graphical user interface e.g.

Hardware detection is usually very good. A new Mageia version appears every year. You can use different kernels. All major and many "small" desktop environments are supported.

Steam runs without problems and is part of the Mageia repository.
