Hippolytus of Rome (170-235 AD)

Although He endured the cross, yet AS GOD He returned to life, having trampled upon death. For His God and Father addresses Him and says, “Sit at my right hand.” Hippolytus (c. 205, W), 5.166, 167. (p. 96)
By the Ancient of Days, he means, none other than the Lord God, and Ruler of all – even of Christ Himself, who makes the days old and yet does not become old Himself by times and days. “His dominion is an everlasting dominion.” The Father, having put all things in subjection to His own Son – both things in heaven and things on earth – presented Him as the First-Begotten of God. He did this in order that, along with the Father, He might be approved before angels as the Son of God and be manifested as also the Lord of angels. Hippolytus (c. 205, W), 5.189. (Ibid.)
Christ’s body lay in the tomb, not emptied of divinity. Rather, while in Hades, He was in essential being with His Father. Yet, He was also in the body and in Hades. For the Son of God IS NOT CONTAINED IN SPACE, JUST AS THE FATHER IS NOT. And he comprehends ALL THINGS IN HIMSELF. Hippolytus (c. 205, W), 5.194. (pp. 96-97)
Having been made man, HE IS STILL GOD FOREVER. For to this effect, John also said, “Who is, and who was, and who is come- THE ALMIGHTY.” And He was appropriately called Christ “the Almighty”. For in this, he has said only WHAT CHRIST TESITIFIES ABOUT HIMSELF. For Christ gave this testimony about and said, “All things are delivered unto me by my Father.” Hippolytus (c 205, W) 5.225. (Ibid.)
“God, subsisting alone, and having nothing contemporaneous with Himself, determined to create the world… Beside Him there was nothing; but He, while existing alone, YET EXISTED IN PLURALITY… Thus, then, these too, though they wish it not, fall in with the truth, and admit that one God made all thingsFor Christ is THE GOD ABOVE ALL… He who is over all is God; for thus He speaks boldly, ‘All things are delivered unto me of my Father.’ He who is over all, God blessed, has been born…” The Ante-Nicene Fathers, vol. 5, pp. 227, 153, 225
The Father begat the Word as the Author, Fellow-Counselor, and Framer of the things that have been created. He uttered the first Voice, begetting Him as Light of Light. And He sent forth to the world as its Lord. Hippolytus (c. 205, W), 5:227. (p. 101)
This solitary and supreme Deity, by an exercise of reflection, brought forth the Logos first … Him alone did [the Father] produce from existing things. For the Father constituted existence, and the Being born from Him was the cause of ALL THINGS that are produced. The Logos was IN [the Father] HIMSELF, bearing the will of His Begetter and not being unacquainted with the mind of the Father. Hippolytus (c. 205, W), 5.150, 151. (Ibid.)
He who was CO-EXISTENT WITH HIS FATHER BEFORE ALL TIME, and before the foundation of the world, always had the glory proper to Divinity. Hippolytus (c. 205, W), 5.167. (p. 105)
He was born the Word, of the heart of the Father, BEFORE ALL. Hippolytus (c. 205, W), 5.189. (Ibid.)
They killed the Son of their Benefactor, for He is CO-ETERNAL with the Father. Hippolytus (c. 205, W), 5.220. (Ibid.)
Thus there appeared another One beside Himself. But when I say “another,” I do not mean that there are two Gods, but that is only as light of light, or as water from a fountain, or as a ray from the sun. For there is but one Power which is from the All. And the Father is the All, from whom comes this Power, the Word. Hippolytus (c. 205, W), 5.227. (p. 108)
The Logos alone of this One is from God Himself. For that reason also, He is God, being of the substance of God. IN CONTRAST, the world was made from nothing. Therefore, it is not God. Hippolytus (c. 205, W),5.151. (p. 110)

Justin Martyr (100-165 AD)

The Word … He is Divine. Justin Martyr (c. 160, E), 1.166 (p. 94)
The Father of the Universe has a Son. And He, being the First-Begotten Word of God, IS EVEN GOD. Justin Martyr (c. 160, E), 1.184. (Ibid.)
Next to God, we worship and love the Word who is from the unbegotten and ineffable God. Justin Martyr (c. 160, E), 1.193. (Ibid.)
For Christ is King, Priest, GOD, LORD, Angel, and MAN. Justin Martyr (c. 160, E), 1.211. (Ibid.)
He deserves to be worshiped AS GOD and as Christ. Justin Martyr (c. 160, E), 1.229. (Ibid.)
David predicted that He would be born from the womb before the sun and moon, according to the Father’s will. He made Him known, being Christ, AS GOD, and to be worshiped. Justin Martyr (c. 160, E), 1.237. (Ibid.)
If you had understood what has been written by the prophets, you would not have denied that HE WAS GOD, Son of the Only, Unbegotten, Unutterable God. Justin Martyr (c. 160, E), 1.263. (Ibid.)
We assert that the Word of God was born of God in a peculiar manner, different from ordinary generation. Justin Martyr (c. 160, E), 1170. (p. 101)
His Son … also was with Him and was begotten BEFORE the works, when at first He created ALL THINGS BY HIM. Justin Martyr (c. 160, E), 1.190. (Ibid.) (p. 104)
And Trypho [a Jew] said, “For some of it appears to me to be paradoxical, and wholly incapable of proof. For example, you say that this Christ EXISTS AS GOD BEFORE THE AGES.” Justin Martyr (c. 160, E), 1.219. (Ibid.)
This is He WHO EXISTED BEFORE ALL, who is the eternal Priest of God, and King, and Christ. Justin Martyr (c. 160, E), 1.247. (Ibid.)
We know Him to be the First-Begotten of God, AND TO BE BEFORE ALL CREATURES … Since we call Him the Son, we have understood that, BEFORE ALL CREATURES, He proceeded from the Father by His power and will. Justin Martyr (c. 160, E), 1.249. (Ibid.)
I will give you another testimony … from Scriptures, that God begat BEFORE ALL CREATURES A BEGINNING, a certain Power … who is called by the Holy Spirit, sometimes the Glory of the Lord, sometimes the Son, again Wisdom, again an Angel, then GOD, then LORD, and Logos. Justin Martyr (c. 160, E), 1.227. (p. 107)
God speaks in the creation of man with the very same design, in the following words: “Let us make man in our image and likeness,” … From this, we can indisputably learn that God conversed with someone numerically distinct from Himself, and was also a rational Being … For I would not say that the dogma of that heresy which is said to be among you Jews is true, or that the teachers of it can prove that God spoke to angels, or that the human frame was the workmanship of angels. But this Offspring who was truly brought forth from the Father, was with the Father BEFORE ALL CREATURES. And the Father communed with Him. It is even clear, that He whom Solomon calls Wisdom was begotten as a Beginning BEFORE ALL HIS CREATURES. Justin Martyr (c. 160, E), 1.228. (pp. 109-110)

Luke 2:11

Luke 2:11:
For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
John 4:42:
Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.”
Philippians 3:20-21:
20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
21 who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.
Acts 4:12:
Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Clearly, Jesus Christ is our Saviour, no one denies that. According to the Old Testament, there is no Saviour besides God:

Isaiah 43:10-11:
10 “You are My witnesses,” says the Lord,
“And My servant whom I have chosen,
That you may know and believe Me,
And understand that I am He.
Before Me there was no God formed,
Nor shall there be after Me.
11 I, even I, am the Lord,
And besides Me there is no savior.
Hosea 13:4:
“Yet I am the Lord your God
Ever since the land of Egypt,
And you shall know no God but Me;
For there is no savior besides Me.

Therefore, Jesus Christ, the Eternal Son - is God, as affirmed in 1 Peter 1:1 and Titus 2:13:

2 Peter 1:1:
Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ,
To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:
Titus 2:13:
looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,

And this is why it was prophesied in Isaiah 9:6 that the Messiah (the Saviour of the world) is God:

Isaiah 9:6:
For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 10:21:
The remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob,
To the Mighty God.

John 1:9 / John 8:12

John 1:1-12:
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.
8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

Clearly, this refers to the Eternal Word / Jesus Christ, Who is called "the true Light".

God (the Father) is called "light":

1 John 1:5-7:
5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

God (the Son) is also called "light". The connection is very clear:

John 1:4-5:
4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
John 8:12:
Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
John 12:35-36, 44-46:
35 Then Jesus said to them, “A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going.
36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and was hidden from them.
...
44 Then Jesus cried out and said, “He who believes in Me, believes not in Me but in Him who sent Me.
45 And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me.
46 I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.

Both (the Father and the Son) and also the Holy Spirit - are all the same true God, Who is the Light.

In the Old Testament:

Jesus Christ is described as "a great light" in the prophecy:

Isaiah 9:1-2, 6:
1 Nevertheless the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed,
As when at first He lightly esteemed
The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
And afterward more heavily oppressed her,
By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,
In Galilee of the Gentiles.
2 The people who walked in darkness
Have seen a great light
;
Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death,
Upon them a light has shined.
...
6 For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

The Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) is referred to as "light" in other parts of the Old Testament:

Psalm 27:1:
The Lord is my light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the strength of my life;
Of whom shall I be afraid?
Isaiah 60:19:
“The sun shall no longer be your light by day,
Nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you;
But the Lord will be to you an everlasting light,
And your God your glory.
Micah 7:8:
Do not rejoice over me, my enemy;
When I fall, I will arise;
When I sit in darkness,
The Lord will be a light to me.

John 5:19

John 5:19:
Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.

"for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner."

Now let's list what God the Father does:
  • God (the Father) created the entire universe. He is the Creator.
  • God (the Father) sustains the entire universe. He is the Sustainer.
  • God (the Father) knows everything. He is all-knowing and omniscient.
  • God (the Father) can do everything. He is omnipotent.

Again, according to John 5:19, Jesus Christ "also does in like manner" all those things.

The problem with all anti-Christian, anti-Trinitarians is that they simply cannot grasp the fact that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are ONE GOD - ONE BEING, NOT three separate beings. So all Three PERSONS of God do everything in perfect UNITY. All Three Persons participated in the creation of universe:

Genesis 1:1-2, 26-27:
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
...
26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
John 1:1-3:
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
Colossians 1:16-17:
16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.
17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
Hebrews 1:3:
who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

Here we see that God incarnate - Jesus Christ is:
  • The Creator - "For by Him all things were created", "All things were made through Him"
  • The Sustainer - "in Him all things consist", "and upholding all things by the word of His power"
  • He is omnipotent and omniscient, as it follows from the fact that He is the Creator.

Yet again, this does not obviously mean that there are three separate Creators or Sustainers, because all three Persons are ONE DIVINE BEING - Who is the Creator and the Sustainer. And He (God) just exists in a unique, mysterious way as three distinct Persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is God, so the way He exists is beyond our finite understanding. All we can do is make sense of what He has revealed to us about Himself - not try to make God easy to understand by downgrading His uniqueness or by making His divine nature more like ours.

Ezekiel 9:4 "mark" is the † (Cross). Connection with Revelation 7:3 / 22:4.

Ezekiel 9:3-6:
3 Now the glory of the God of Israel had gone up from the cherub, where it had been, to the threshold of the temple. And He called to the man clothed with linen, who had the writer’s inkhorn at his side;
4 and the Lord said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and cry over all the abominations that are done within it.”
5 To the others He said in my hearing, “Go after him through the city and kill; do not let your eye spare, nor have any pity.
6 ...
but do not come near anyone on whom is the mark; and begin at My sanctuary.” So they began with the elders who were before the temple.

"put a mark on the foreheads"
"but do not come near anyone on whom is the mark"

תָּו - tāv (ת + qamats vowel + vav) - ("a mark").

"ת" - modern writing of the letter tav, which means sign, mark, or cross. The modern Hebrew alphabet replaced the pre-Babylonian Exile Hebrew alphabet. Keep this in mind.

Ezekiel was born in 622 BC and was deported to Babylon in 597 BC. The book of Ezekiel was written during the Babylonian Exile - around 593–571 BC, then Ezekiel died in 571 BC. The Babylonian Exile ended around 538 BC.

Why is it important? Because before the Babylonian Exile, Hebrew was written in the "Paleo-Hebrew script". So, "mark" - the letter tav (the last letter in the alphabet) was written as Cross - |"†"|"+"|"x"|. In the time of Ezekiel, the alphabet had not yet been changed.

The complete Ancient Hebrew Alphabet - click here (link inside Steam)

The script began to change during the Exile, and only after the Exile (538 BC) did the new script, closely resembling the modern one - become dominant. The writing of the letter tav also changed, becoming similar to its modern form: "ת".

So, Ezekiel most certainly saw "†" (tav - mark).

Connection:

Revelation 7:2-3:
2 Then I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God. And he cried with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea,
3 saying, “Do not harm the earth, the sea, or the trees till we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.”
Revelation 9:4:
4 They were commanded not to harm the grass of the earth, or any green thing, or any tree, but only those men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.
Revelation 22:3-4:
3 And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him.
4 They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads.

Ezekiel:
"put a mark (†) on the foreheads"
"but do not come near anyone on whom is the mark (†)"
->
Revelation:
"Do not harm the earth ...
till we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads"
"His name shall be on their foreheads"

And what is the most prominent symbol of Christ? - † (Cross).

Acts 4:12:
Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
John 14:6:
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Acts 20:28

Acts 20:28:
25 “And indeed, now I know that you all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, will see my face no more.
26 Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men.
27 For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God.
28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.
Ephesians 1:5-7:
5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,
6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.
7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace

"to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood"

Who is "He" in this verse? Clearly, from the context, the phrase structure and simple logic, "He" refers to God. This becomes even more evident when looking at the preceding verses.

Now, how could God purchase with "His own blood" the Church?
Obviously, because God "became flesh and dwelt among us":

John 1:1, 14:
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
1 Timothy 3:16:
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:
God was manifested in the flesh,...
Colossians 2:9:
For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily;
Romans 9:5:
of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen.
John 20:28-29:
28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!
29 Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
