1 John 5:20

1 John 5:20:
And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

"This is the true God and eternal life"

Now, some may say that this refers to God the Father and not to Jesus Christ. However, if you understand Greek grammar, you will see that the last sentence refers to the nearest antecedent - "Son Jesus Christ".

This is the true God and eternal life.

οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ ἀληθινὸς θεὸς καὶ ἥ ζωὴ αἶώνιος

If St. John had intended to refer to God the Father, he could have used “ἐκεῖνος” (That one) instead of “οὗτος” (This one).

This fact about Greek grammar is widely known. That’s why the early Christians (and not only them) - most of whom knew the Greek language fluently, used this verse as evidence for the divinity of Christ.

"that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ."

Romans 8:1:
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 5:17:
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

"This is the true God and eternal life" - as we already know, according to Greek grammar, this refers to Jesus Christ.

1 John 1:1-3:
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life
2 the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us
3 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.
John 11:25-26:
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.
26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
John 14:6:
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
