Isaiah 9:6

Isaiah 9:6:
For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 10:21:
The remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob,
To the Mighty God.

In short:

It’s clear from Isaiah 9:6 that the Messiah - our Lord Jesus Christ, is God, judging by the names He is called.

In detail:

The prophesied Messiah - Jesus Christ is called:

1. "Wonderful" - is connected to the Old Testament theophanies of the Second Person. To fully understand this, we need to explore those theophanies in detail - which is too much to cover here, so perhaps in another article. Or, you can read St. Justin Martyr, St. Irenaeus, or other early Christians/Church Fathers.

2. "Counselor" - is used for the same reason the Holy Spirit - the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity is called Helper.

John 7:39:
37On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.
38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
John 14:26:
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

The Eternal Word guided (counseled) the Apostles and others on how to live according to His (God's) will, how to be saved, etc. The Holy Spirit clearly does the same, because He is God Himself.

3. "Mighty God" - is as clear as day. The Son who was born - Jesus Christ, is the Mighty God Himself, according to the prophecy of Isaiah.

Yet some anti-Christians argue, “See? It says 'Mighty God', not 'Almighty God'.”

This argument is complete nonsense, because even the Father - Whom they recognize as God, is called “Mighty God” in the very same book of Isaiah.

Isaiah 10:20-22:
20 And it shall come to pass in that day
That the remnant of Israel,
And such as have escaped of the house of Jacob,
Will never again depend on him who defeated them,
But will depend on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
21 The remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob,
To the Mighty God.
22 For though your people, O Israel, be as the sand of the sea,
A remnant of them will return;
The destruction decreed shall overflow with righteousness.

And other places: Deuteronomy 10:17, Jeremiah 32:18, Nehemiah 9:32, Psalm 24:8...

So the Son, like the Father, is "Mighty God" - because the Father and the Son are One... God.

John 10:30:
I and My Father are one.

4. "Everlasting Father" - Jesus Christ is called this way because:

- His origin is from "everlasting" (from the days of eternity):

Micah 5:2:
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Though you are little among the thousands of Judah,
Yet out of you shall come forth to Me
The One to be Ruler in Israel,
Whose goings forth are from of old,
From everlasting.

- He is "the author of eternal salvation":

Hebrews 5:7-9:
7 who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear,
8 though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.
9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,
John 3:16:
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

- He is God:

John 14:9:
Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
John 10:30:
I and My Father are one.”
John 1:1:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

5. "Prince of Peace" - because after His judgement - there will be peace:

John 5:22-23:
22 For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son,
23 that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
Psalm 50:6:
Let the heavens declare His righteousness,
For God Himself is Judge. Selah
Revelation 21:4:
And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

-Whoever believes in Him already has peace:

John 14:27:
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
