Before Europeans came, South Africa was inhabited by the Zulu and Xhosa peoples. It wasn't until the late 15th century when the Portuguese founded the land. But in 1652 Jan van Riebeeck established a small refreshment station at the Cape of Good Hope. On behalf of the Dutch East India Company slaves were transported from Indonesia, Madagascar, and India as extra help for the new colony. But as the Dutch expanded east they found the Xhosa peoples, and a series of wars started called the Cape Frontier Wars, which ended as a stalemate. In 1795 the British captured the Cape of Good Hope area, mostly to stop the French First Republic which had invaded the area. The British annexed the cape colony in 1806. The British also had some battles with the Xhosa's over land issues. In the 1830's 12,000 Boer's departed from the Cape Colony, they soon after founded the Boer Republics and the South African Republic. With the discovery of diamonds and gold struck wars between the British and Boers known as The First Boer-War (1880-1881). The Boers successfully resisted British attacks using guerrilla tactics. But in The Second Boer-Wars (1899-1902) the British came back with greater numbers, more experience, and more suitable tactics.
