Daddy 30 Oct, 2016 @ 6:05am
maybe it has to do with parallel universes, I multiverse that u travel in.
Daddy 30 Oct, 2016 @ 6:04am
think like this, if I were a developer, and I wanted to make a prequel to portal, just without portals... what would I make...
Daddy 30 Oct, 2016 @ 6:03am
But I've been struck by an idea... what if f-stop had to do with changing the size of a portal, and it might change the amount of gravity or something, or maybe you find the device and you blur things out until they don't exist.

I want to see F-STOP happen. I'm in.

"F-Stop means the size of an aperture, right? So, if we assume that portals are considered apertures, we get a different sized portal. Such as... I don't know... maybe one that could have gotten the Borealis from miles underneath the surface to the Arctic."
Found this on an old part of the forums
Rick fetish 5 Jul, 2015 @ 6:03pm
F-STOP is a camera term with the use of light. Portal 2's mechanic used to be F-STOP most likely because it was a good mechanic and an aperture is another camera term.

The mechanic most likely had to do with changing amount of lights or firing beams of light. Either way, it would be cool.

Hello people of the f-stop group... i think that F-stop is a mechanic in a very old beta version of portal 2... now i think it would be cool to be able to play test this old beta, but it is probably not finished, and they might not finish the beta till we pick up a large following, so lets get some more followers for this group, ok?
Timerider 21 Apr, 2014 @ 6:57pm
I just remembered this after looking at Portal 2 mods and was trying to see if Valve had ever actually revealed any more information on it. It bugs me that they were so interested in this mystery concept and then kept it a secret. I want to know!
And oh hey I'm the 300th member now.

F-Stop wud be amazin
Loveless 9 Dec, 2012 @ 12:53pm
Guys, Valve know that F-Stop was a great concept, whatever it was. They don't need you to tell them that, or to tell them to make a game out of it; they're the most creative game developer out there, and if they had a great concept you can bet they'll make a great game out of it. There is zero evidence to support the idea that they 'abandoned it' with no intention of ever working on it again.
Ciirulean 29 Nov, 2012 @ 6:01pm
It was on The Final Hours of Portal 2- don't you remember?
Crambrulee 29 Nov, 2012 @ 6:00pm
Interesting, i don't think i've ever heard of f-stop before, but it seems like it could possibly be a good game.
Ciirulean 27 Nov, 2012 @ 8:18pm
I always wanted to play F-Stop...
MachManX 21 Nov, 2012 @ 3:20pm
Sounds interesting...I'm in! Thanks Geneosis for the invite :) Though I wish the Valve team would update the game to properly support newer hardware rather than applying bandaid patches...

Valve is a company run by employee motive. They make games that they are interested in because they want to. Portal 2 was created because Portal (1) was made by a small band of low-budgeted employees and there was a lot of people who just wanted to develop a Portal game. So, they began to develop F-STOP (after it was produced by the 'Directed Design Experiments' of 2007), until it became apparent that a game entitled "Portal 2" without the use of Portals was really stupid. But, just like Kim Swift's time-ghost mechanic, Joshua Weier's F-STOP concept was something many people concieved and worked on and loved. And all of Valve has, on every single occasion, kept the F-STOP concept secret because "it will most likely be used in a future Valve product." (or something to that effect) I'm only re-telling this information for the few who do not know and the reassure that we WILL get F-STOP.
Gunnar Clovis 9 Aug, 2012 @ 4:50pm
I don't belive Swift stole the concept. There is no possible way she would get away with that. And besides, as it clearly states in "The Final Hours of Portal 2", Kim Swift had her own idea (as previousy mentioned in this thread). Kim thought Portal 2 would be adding a ghost version of the player to add time related mechanics. At first, you portal a box off a ledge, making it fall into 'liquid neurotoxin' (my pet name for the Aperture Science deadly goo). But, with the addition of time, the ghost version of you portals the cube off, but the real you flings yourself over to catch it at just the right moment. That was Swift's idea. An idea she herself concieved and worked on and became attached to and still thinks could work. And Valve has kept the F-STOP concept secretive so they can use it in a future product. Unless a band of people sprouts up saying they for some reason DON'T want F-STOP, F-STOP will be made. Its just that this group may speed up when it is made.
Keavon 24 Jul, 2012 @ 7:44pm
Avallach, thanks for the link!
Keavon 4 Jul, 2012 @ 7:03pm
I also wondered if Quantum Conundrum is the F-STOP concept. Knowing what Vitrifier said below, I still do believe that it is possible, though, but somewhat unlikely.
Pvt. Shereda [29ID] 13 Jun, 2012 @ 9:45am
The lead designer of Quanty, Kim Swift, left Valve sometime before December 9, 2009. Valve decided to scrap F-Stop and make Portal 2 actually have portals in December of 2008. It is possible that she took the idea from valve when she left, however it clearly wasn't her idea. Her idea for Portal 2 was incorporating portals and time, and Valve scrapped that idea because it wasn't fun enough. F-stop was someone else's idea (Joshua Weier). So, if you are right VTCarter, that would mean Kim Swift decided to take someone else's year old idea that didn't work, leave the company with it, and create a new game out of it. Also, Valve is thinking of using the F-stop mechanic in future products, and Kim would know about this because she has friends that work for Valve, and they tell her confidential information about what Valve is doing. I think Kim has too many ties to valve to use the F-Stop mechanic and sell it.
VTCarter 26 Jan, 2012 @ 4:51pm
could Quantum Conundrum be F-Stop in action?????
Pvt. Shereda [29ID] 15 Jan, 2012 @ 1:59pm
I like that analogy.
Keavon 19 Sep, 2011 @ 6:41pm
I also thought about making a mod, but really no information is given. Not even the most important part: the gameplay concept. While I am a hobbiest modder, there is no way I can make a game that has no information about it. It's like copying a painting which you have never seen. So we gotta get Valve to show us that beautiful painting.
Keavon 19 Sep, 2011 @ 6:07pm
They never said that they "comfort" not making it. They simply dumped it because it wasn't Portal 2. Now that Portals 2 is out, all of the developers love it still. And Valve does listen to their customer's ideas in a strange way that this may include. I mean, after all, Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat were both origionated from Half-life mods. It's possible that, with enough community support, Valve might listen. And anyways, this group is a great way to connect with other Portal fans.
ChungusGaming 19 Sep, 2011 @ 2:41pm
maybe if valve comforts that they won't make it someone should make a mod
