If you want to mann up, the best way to aquire a crew is to get in chat, and invite everyone to chat who is in game.

Hi, so I was thinking, and figured out that the only thing you can invite people to is chat, not actually into a game, unless they are on your friends list.

So, if you are in chat, that means you are looking for a mvm team, and you can invite in game people into chat.
