Purpose of Early Access and Rationale for Guidelines
    Purpose of Early Access:

    As a Developer:

  • Incentivize release of games with unusual subject matter, novel gameplay concepts, innovative mechanics and experimental projects that push the envelope and definition of gaming
  • Provide small/independent developers marketing/exposure and allow for early revenue which may avoid the need for a publisher
  • Population of playtesters that will provide feedback and may aid defining focus/direction of development

    As a Customer:

  • Support a cool concept/developer
  • Form part of the game's evolution and development and help shape it through feedback
  • The customer assumes a portion of the role of "publisher" by funding the "developer", as such, monetization transparency is expected from the developer on their plans for the title.



    Rationale for Guidelines:

  • Incentivize transparency in Timeline and Monetization
  • Incentivize project progress and completion
  • Protect customers from Early Access abuse, including low-level and overt scams
  • Create reasonable expectations for customers, which can be met by the product/developer in a reasonable timeframe/monetization model
