In 1981 Ronald Reagan was shot dead in Washington DC, by John Hinckley. This lead to Vice President George Bush to take control of the nation and instead of seeking peaceful ways of ending the cold war, like President Ronald Reagan did, he only escalated it. In 1983, George Bush drew up plans for Australia and India to strike against Communist China to usher in a new era of freedom, however this only lead to a prolonged war in the pacific ocean and western borders of China, costing thousands of lives on each side. This lead to dissent and a heavy demand of war goods back in America, every day there would be a protest or a death in the workplace. This lead to reforms increasing work-hours, less pay and more powers to the police to control rioters and other misfits in the country. With the population oppressed the government could continue their war against Communism.

However in 1997 a lethal batch of evolved Smallpox got loose in Chicago and quickly spread among the people. There was no vaccine so many died to its effects which included large rashes, severe vomiting, chills, bad headaches, muscle pain and then eventual shutdown of the body. Some rumours would have you believe it turns someone into a mindless drone, but those are “just” rumours. It then managed to make its way all across the world, and the world’s population dropped like flies. By 1999 the population dropped from six billion to one million. However the Megacorporation Victrix.Inc grew, with the rumour they had the cure and were giving it to people in their company so they grew and managed to build New Chicago which would be their new HQ.
However, remnants of the US government have slowly started to rebuild, while Victrix.Inc supplies them with guns, ammo, building materials and much more. And in return the Victrix.Inc gain more power. So now life only continues in safe zones controlled by the US government and influenced by Victrix.Inc. (The US governmental remnants are called the New American Republic)
