There are two themes (though not tags) that will make me crazy and have to buy: Batman: Arkham and Tomb Raider.

Let's go with themes and words and the likes! You're right tags might be a bit confusing, plus while many different "styles" of the game made it as an official tag, many still haven't...
So we'll just describe it as this obscure "SOMETHING" you see and think "Alright, I'm checking this one out for myself"

Ahhh.... Batman: Arkham Asylum... Back in the day, I believe no other game have woken up a completionist in me as that one. After HOURS of my life spent trying to get some elusive stuff, I had to remind myself to go see the sun :)

And possibly forget all reason... I feel like most of the people have something (a theme/genre/style) that will make them buy (of follow in case of early development) game no matter how little info there's out there or how "not particularly spectacular" the game looks.
I'm a sucker for almost everything that will be tagged as "lovecraftian"; LOVE me some noir, and pretty much guaranteed to check out any morbid horror adventures (the story-driven, not the action-filled kind)... What are some of those things/words that are enough for you to be immediately interested in the game?

MONKEY ISLAND games, Grim Fandango, Sam & Max, Edna and Harvey, Broken Sword games, Syberia, Runaway trilogy, The Longest Journey, Hector (The Badge of Carnage), The Wolf Among Us, Emerald City Confidential, The Cat Lady, Downfall...That's just on top of my head...
Some of these are good old classics I replay from time to time, but some (Like Edna and Harvey, Hector, Cat Lady) I just discovered recently and my brain was blown...

Also - Psychonauts and Beyond Good and Evil as games that have a strong element of adventure present, but not considered adventure outright - amazing games

One of the very first ones I've ever played was The Secret of Monkey Island, oh and Goblins (and Gobliins and Gobliiins which I all dearly love), and , like many here, Prince of Persia (I can still recall the sound when you die) and Wolfenstein, of course :)
