"The Emerald Guard"

8th Infantry Regiment, the first Confederate regiment to be enlisted for the war from the grand state of Alabama, was organized at Montgomery, Alabama, in May, 1861. Its members were recruited in Mobile, Perry, Dallas, Butler, and Coosa counties.Its ranks were composed mostly of Irish immigrants, 104 of 109 to be exact. The 8th Alabama was the first Alabama regiment to enlist in the Confederate army. The Emerald Guard fought in almost every major conflict of the "War Between the States", including Seven Pines, Williamsburg, and Gettysburg.
