So, I just bought arma 3.
The default ArmA3 launcher is great. It will download and update any mods you have downloaded from the Steam workshop. Most other mods that you download from Armaholic for example are in folders named like "@modname" and they're then placed in the root ArmA 3 folder. The launcher then can locate the folder and add the mod folder to your list of mods. Once you have a selection of mods you can tick the box next to them to load and unload them. One great thing about this is that if you wish to run the vanilla game you don't have to uninstall everything but you can use the launcher to unload them and such. If you have multiple incompatible mods you can create mod presets so you can quickly switch between different variations of loaded mods e.g "Vietnam mods" or "Zombie mods". Stuff from Armaholic works perfectly with the official launcher.

Other than that, it's a military sim but can also be anything from apocalyptic survival, specific linear scenarios and stuff "Life" (An open ended thing where you usually play as a civilian doing all sorts of activities and other players as cops/police with anything from 100-230 players per server, although keep in mind that the map sizes vary from 5-10SqKm to 1,600SqKm in size.) Keep in mind though that all these modes still run on the same base game with the realistic weapon mechanics and such. The editor lets you create scenarios and mess about with all the vehicles, weapons and units and create scenarios or to just mess about in the open worlds.

The playerbase is usually better on US servers from what I've seen although UK specific servers in Europe specifically are great. As Flup mentioned it's not a run and gun sort of thing and a lot more tactics and strategy/logistics on a wider scale is involved. That being said the game has plenty of options on how complex you want it to be, there's a great variety of multi player modes and singleplayer scenarios varying from very serious milsim stuff to more casual/quick action stuff.

The largest issue you will probably deal with is the frame rate and occasional desync issues. The game will require a decent video card but it really relies on CPU performance. Desync isn't normally an issue on well run servers. Apologies for any typos, on mobile.

Haven't heard any of this on the mainstream news network

All I see is old articles, dated pre-Olympics, with, to my knowledge, unproven allegations

I'm curious. Are there any articles already out there detailing this? Or just details in general.
It's been terrible. A Russian boxer, Vladimir Nikitin blatantly cheated out two boxers in a row with the judges being bribed. An Irish Boxer and a Kazakh boxer both lost to him despite those two winning without any doubt - the Irish boxer left him covered in blood and from the injuries he received he couldn't even play the next match! Yet the judges voted "unanimously" in favour of the Russian. It's terrible and I can't understand how the olympics still hold any credibility.

Not only this but the fact that the olympics is taking place in a developing country riddled with civil unrest and crazy amounts of crime is something I can't understand. Small communities have had their homes removed and destroyed to facilitate olympic grounds. Sound barriers and large walls were put up to block the view of the slums yet leave the fancy new buildings in sight.

Well, Americans got 100+ medals so I can't say I'm surprised
I doubt the Americans are as bad as some other countries when it comes to doping and cheating.
