Minimum wage should exist, at least in principle, to keep people from being paid what are essentially a slave's wages. We don't want the same conditions that we had circa 1840 in Englad and the United States.

That being said, arguing about minimum wage increases really comes down to whether a person is supposed to subsist on a service sector job or not., like pointed out by Stake. I personally believe that one should be able to, at least in Western countries; we're a service sector-oriented society, and since 80% of our jobs are in the service sector[www.bls.gov], it makes sense that these jobs should work under a mininum wage that is adjusted to the standard of living.

Of course, I don't believe that most entry-level jobs should pay the median wage, which is $840 or so[www.bls.gov], or about $42 000 a year; they are entry-level jobs, and should really only be a gateway into the workforce.

Therefore, I believe that the minimum wage should be adjusted to a percentage of a living wage, perhaps 50-60%, in order to provide more income for those who, for some reason or other, can't get out of an entry-level job, without providing an unreasonable amount of pressure on businesses.
