The US version of FFV protagonist is actually Bartz, better than ass. Still, yeah, every old Final Fantasy series have a very odd style and really unique imo. Everyone looks like a stripper, even on a dancer outfit.

And the US version of Aerith is Aeris. And the US name of Ratix (Star Ocean) is Roddick. No one cares what the "official" US names though, since we already know what their correct name translations are.
