Mainstream music is, and will forever be garbage to me. None of it has the amount of passion, energy, thought, and purpose unlike the underground's material. And whenever those elements do comes to the mainstream, it's message becomes watered-down. Take Grunge-rock for an example: what was once a battle-cry against our mainstream culture's rejection towards integrity, sincerity, and individuality has now become a product for corporations to sell you, and a trend for the next generation; what that message fought against in the first place.

But I'm not going to be an elitist, or show bias. Without mainstream music, or any specific type of genre or culture, many of those great artists would've never gotten any inspiration. But it doesn't just have to be love or passion that inspires you, it's also the music that you hate that inspires you to play, and what you want to do right with your music. So, I can't hate on it too much.
