The cynical side of me says that the trend will either sit with open world "Action Adventure" games or will slowly move back to boring "Spunkgargleweewee"[www.urbandictionary.com] shooters because that's what the majority of kids play these days and they make up the majoity of gamers.

But, I hope that the trend shifts towards (in my opinion) "True RPGs". Stuff like Fallout 2, Pillars of Eternity and Fallout New Vegas. Games that focus on giving the player choices depending on how they think their character would react to a certain scenario (a key part of table top RPGs like DnD).
