The Half Life 3 Effect. It's a scenario where a game is so overhyped that when it comes out the whole game market crashes in half. A lower-grade effect could be seen with No Man's Sky.

Why is it called like that? Well, HL3 isn't going to live up to our standards. Ever. We gave it a status of a legend, however in some communities (like here) people think it's a stale meme. Half Life 3 is probably going to be like Duke Nukem Forever with a harder-hitting effect.

There is a chance that HL3 will be great, but it's slight.

tl;dr HL3 is a "high risk, high reward" kind of game. If it succeeds Valve'll have at least 50 million copies sold. If not, then...basically, Steam will lose half the people.

Also, HL3 will probably work on Source 2.
