It mostly stemmed from his very sheltered early life, being raised by "traditional" Americans. He got significantly less racist in his older years, when he got more social and started dating the woman who would become his wife.

Actually, his marriage to Sonia Greene brought out the worst in him. He had to move from his beloved city Providence, and to New York. He absolutely fucking hated it, the heat, all the foreigners and race mixing drove him bonkers.

But you're right, he did get better as he got older and more travelled. But all this came many years after his "divorce" from Sonia (he actually never filed the divorce papers, and she didn't know after he died and she remarried).

Top of my list: Japan, Iceland.
Middle teir: China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, North America (Chicago, Seattle and Dallas mainly).
Lower tier: Sweden, Finland, Norway, Argentina.

I'd die happy if I could see at least one of each tier in my life. I'm pretty well travelled already.

You don't really see it in his books, but his racism was well known.


Still, he was a good writer.

It was pretty obvious in many of his stories, "The Horror at Red Hook" being the most blatant.
