Had it been Obama on stage, he would have been able to shut Trump down right from the start with just a few well timed jokes. Hillary just does not that unflappable charisma, and Trump promising he would have a "special prosecutor" on her case did shake her up.

It was too weird to call it a win; Trump walking around in circles, making up his own questions, those bizarre and made up claims, and turning his back on the audience when they were laughing at him. But he did put Hillary on edge, and turn the attention on emails, Benghazi, the 40 year old rape case, Bill Clinton, etc. Perhaps that was enough. Based on that, must be why the public thought Trump won it.

Referendums are harder to predict because they are one-off things, elections that happen at every number of years have an lot of data behind them.

Yeah, it could still be wrong of course, but right now, it looks like the debate repaired some of the damage Trump received this week.
