I'd say Gen 2 or Gen 3. Gen 2 had a long story and had mysterious things that it made the game awesome(as well as going to Kanto after finishing Johto and fighting the legendary trainer Red). Gen 3 had its legendary fight between Kyogre and Groudon as well as having a big map with many things to do.
