But when you do play multiplayer whether it be a PvE scenario or PvP gamemodes, one good thing to note is that fatigue is a big thing in Arma and you'll have to run short distances at a time or your weapon accuracy and overall efficiency in combat will fall drastically. Camoflauge is good when playing against people, so pick clothing suitable for your environment (ex: a ghillie suit in the middle of a city isn't going to work) bots will see right through canoflauge so don't bother. Arma is really all about tactics so don't run in guns blazing, but rather take it slowly and plan your every move.
Other than that, it's a military sim but can also be anything from apocalyptic survival, specific linear scenarios and stuff "Life" (An open ended thing where you usually play as a civilian doing all sorts of activities and other players as cops/police with anything from 100-230 players per server, although keep in mind that the map sizes vary from 5-10SqKm to 1,600SqKm in size.) Keep in mind though that all these modes still run on the same base game with the realistic weapon mechanics and such. The editor lets you create scenarios and mess about with all the vehicles, weapons and units and create scenarios or to just mess about in the open worlds.
The playerbase is usually better on US servers from what I've seen although UK specific servers in Europe specifically are great. As Flup mentioned it's not a run and gun sort of thing and a lot more tactics and strategy/logistics on a wider scale is involved. That being said the game has plenty of options on how complex you want it to be, there's a great variety of multi player modes and singleplayer scenarios varying from very serious milsim stuff to more casual/quick action stuff.
The largest issue you will probably deal with is the frame rate and occasional desync issues. The game will require a decent video card but it really relies on CPU performance. Desync isn't normally an issue on well run servers. Apologies for any typos, on mobile.
"No mate, that was the game desyncing!" replied the driver. "I wasn't speeding-"
"Here is the fine sir, please pay the 25,000$ fine for driving misconduct..."
"Mate please, I don't have 25,000 quid on me, I just joined the server...
"...fine I'll pay, but the ticket fine window is bugged for me!" cried the player.
"Sir you're not cooperating with me in this situation; I am going to have to arrest you for your failure to comply with me."
"It's not my fault, the ticket button wouldn't work, there's an issue with the server scripting!"
"GET INSIDE THE VEHICLE SIR OR WE WILL TAZE YOU!"
High pitched squeeky hooligans running around in the background..."
"I CAN'T MY GAME IS STUCK ON THE TICKET YOU GAV-"
Zap!
"SIR YOU ARE BEING DETAINED FOR DRIVING MISCONDUCT AND FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH MY DEMANDS"
"I can't see what's happening the ticket fine window is stil-"
"SIR WHY WON'T FIT IN THE VEHICLE"
At this point the player's body is being dragged around in a fickle series of movements as the officer attempts to operate the inconsistent server specific UI.
"SIR GET INSIDE THE VEH-
The police vehicle explodes for no apparent reason other than PhysX or something...
